Following Donald Trump‘s victory in the 2024 Presidential elections, several athletes congratulated him. One of them was former New York Rangers star Tony DeAngelo, who took to his X account to celebrate the win of Trump. In this, he listed his support for the 78-year-old as a reason for him not playing in the NHL anymore.

The defenseman signed a one-year contract with the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) team SKA Saint Petersburg after his contract with the Carolina Hurricanes came to an end. He has opined that the reason for his absence from the NHL is due to him being a Trump supporter.

In his post on X, the KHLer boasted that he was one of the few people who stood behind Trump from day one. Furthermore, he claimed that the “silent majority” once again showed up and voted.

This feels good. I was one of the only athletes to stand behind Trump from day one. It’s one of the reasons I’m not in the nhl anymore but our country is more important! The silent majority once again showed up, people who unfortunately had to be scared to support used the VOTE!

Earlier DeAngelo stated that he “considered every option” including signing a PTO contract to stay in the NHL. He revealed that though he had options, they were not good enough and he thus decided to go to Russia and experience playing in a new league.

Ex-NHL referee Tim Peel claps back at Tony DeAngelo’s claim regarding his absence

Tony DeAngelo’s claim regarding his absence from the NHL caused a stir on social media. Several users called him out for this, with one of them being former referee Tim Peel.

After a controversial hot-mic incident in 2021, Peel retired from officiating. At the moment, he is well-active on X and often shares insights regarding the hockey world. In his reply to DeAngelo’s claim, he called him a “distraction” and urged him to look in the mirror.

I don’t think you standing by Trump is the reason. I stand by my comments a year ago. You’re a distraction. You’ve played for 6 teams in 9 years. Look in the mirror!

This reply saw DeAngelo take a shot at him. Peel and former NHL star Jeremy Roenick currently host the SNIPES and STRIPES podcast where they discuss the developments in the hockey world. When DeAngelo told the former official to go back to his podcast, Peel pulled up the 29-year-old’s career stats and took a dig at his move to Russia.

Tim Peel stated

Speaking of his career, DeAngelo has played for the Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, and the New York Rangers. In the KHL, he has picked up 20 points with his new team, with three goals and 17 assists in 16 games so far.
