Tony Ferguson calls out George St. Pierre for a grappling match at Chael Sonnen’s Submission Underground
UFC Lightweight and former Interim Champion “El Cucuy” Tony Ferguson has not been in action since May 2020. Ferguson fought last at UFC 249 against “The Highlight” Justin Gaethje. Tony, who was on a 12 fight win streak and had not lost since 2012 had his winning streak snapped when he was knocked out by the new interim champ.
With Ferguson being on top for years, his match with undefeated UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was in the works. This was the fifth time Khabib vs Ferguson was called off, this being because of the pandemic. Wanting to get back to action, Ferguson was in talks to return back to the Octagon with a fight against Dustin Poirier. However, that could not work too with disagreements between Poirier and the UFC.
Ferguson wants to fight St. Pierre at SUG
Frustrated for not having an opponent to fight with, “El Cucuy” has now called out former two division champ George St. Pierre for a grappling match at Submission Underground. Submission Ground is an event presented by former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen. Ferguson put the recent tweet:
Ferguson was supposed to fight Poirier in the co-main event of UFC 254 but that fell off. However, it seems that Ferguson has set his eyes on “Rush” St. Pierre who is arguably the most complete and decorated fighter of all time.
Although the fight between the two seems highly unlikely, St. Pierre has never ruled out to come out of retirement. The 39 year old fighter has expressed his urge to only come back for one fighter- and that is Lightweight Champ Khabib. There have been rumors that with Khabib will quit his MMA career once his contract with the UFC expires. He still has two fights left. One already booked with Gaethje for UFC 254, Khabib too has always shown his urge to fight St. Pierre.
There have been rumors that the UFC is planning a big fight for Khabib once he deals with his championship fight against Gaethje. Many speculate that UFC might book Khabib vs St. Pierre which would not only result as Khabib’s last fight but would also be the biggest fight in the sport.
Do you think Ferguson and St. Pierre will face each other in a grappling match?
