The weird relationship between legends Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson is incredible to witness for fight fans. It doesn’t take much time for your former rivals to switch from showing great respect to throwing shades at each other. Their latest interaction on social media is definite proof of their love-hate saga.
Recently, in an interview, Khabib Nurmagomedov was asked about how the fight between him and Tony Ferguson would have ended. Nurmagomedov, who is mostly humble, gave an honest opinion, saying his style is the worst for Ferguson. After learning about the comments, ‘El Cucuy’ didn’t waste much time and took to Instagram to give a stern warning. As expected, it was in the most Tony Ferguson way possible.
Lucky punch' Now, was going to leave you alone, but just could help it ya [fat fu**]. What a f**** pu**y, coward like chicken. The fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson was originally slated for 2015. However, it got repeatedly postponed owing to injuries to both fighters, an unsuccessful weight cut, and a global pandemic. Despite widespread interest, the fight never happened, becoming one of the most talked-about ‘what-ifs’ and cursed fights in UFC history.
After Nurmagomedov retired, the possibility of this fight ever happening was completely eliminated. This also had an influence on Ferguson, who said that Dagestani’s retirement caused him to lose some part of himself. However, the occasional jibes at one other on social media were always part of their recent encounters.
Tony Ferguson reflects on his rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov
Right after Khabib Nurmagomedov’s retirement, Tony Ferguson’s downfall started. The veteran is currently on an eight-fight losing streak, which is a UFC all-time record. Surprisingly, at the beginning of this streak, Nurmagomedov had also predicted Ferguson’s collapse.

In his last fight at UFC Abu Dhabi, Tony Ferguson lost to Michel Chiesa and announced his semi-retirement. The ‘Eagle’ was pleased and sent him a wholesome message. Furguson also took it the right way and responded with the same sentiment. He also talked about the unfinished rivalry he shared with Nurmagomedov.
Thank you Khabib. No animosity towards Khabib but we went through hell and back and it was the same thing with Russian fans…the excitement that it was for us to be able to go out there and compete…. everybody just wanted to see that get done.Tony Ferguson via UFC Abu Dhabi post-fight presser
Unsurprisingly, Ferguson later confirmed that he had no plans to retire and wanted to try his luck outside UFC. Ferguson has an enormous fan following, and given the options available, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him elsewhere. BKFC, Karate Combat, and PFL are some of the most viable options for the legend.
