A few days before the 2024 Hero World Challenge, a major development has taken place. On Monday, six-time PGA Tour champion Tony Finau dropped out of the event. This comes after a flurry of rumors linking him to a move to LIV Golf came out once again.
Finau has been linked to a move to LIV Golf for a long time. Last year, reports emerged that he and Tyrrell Hatton could join Jon Rahm‘s new team. While Hatton did eventually jump ships, Finau turned down the chance and stayed on the PGA Tour.
Once again reports have emerged linking him to a move to the Saudi-funded tour. He is reported to be in negotiations with the league as they are looking to expand to 14 teams for the 2025 season.

The 35-year-old was named in the initial 20-man field for the event hosted by Tiger Woods. However, he has now been replaced by Sepp Straka, the runner-up of the tournament last year.
Last week, Woods announced that he would not participate in the event and named three exemptions. Justin Thomas, Jason Day, and Nick Dunlap were the three of them. Following Finau’s withdrawal, Thomas now joins the field as a regular member whereas Straka gets a tournament exemption.

Finau has been a regular participant in the Hero World Challenge. Last season marked his third straight appearance in this competition. He eventually finished the event tied for fourth, five strokes behind eventual winner Scottie Scheffler.
Social media reacts to Tony Finau withdrawing from Hero World Challenge amid rumors of LIV Golf move
Social media users were left surprised when reports of Tony Finau withdrawing from the 2024 Hero World Challenge emerged. The rumors of him being in talks over a possible move to LIV Golf have left the fans in split.
In the last few years, several top stars of the PGA Tour have left them and joined LIV Golf. This has often led to fans slamming them for this move. As reports of Finau potentially moving to the 54-hole circuit came out, fans had mixed reactions.
While some of them were once again stunned, several users called it an interesting move for him. A few of them even trolled him for not winning on the PGA Tour and claimed he would be “perfect fit” for LIV Golf.
Check out a few reactions regarding this development below:
Smart move. A lot of great talent coming to the pga tour. Take the money before you lose your spot to better players.

Definitely a very interesting move, wouldn’t blame Tony for cashing the check!

Smart move for Tony. He doesn't have the killer instinct to win on tour consistently, def not a major so he is the perfect fit for LIV.

Weird

Fuck… ?

I will give the LIV a-holes this… they know exactly whom to target for the most impact psychologically. Tony Finau was considered one of the really good guys who wouldn’t be willing to sellout.
Obviously, everyone has their price. ?
Big name avg game

Don’t blame him for taking the money
When the debt collectors come calling, you've gotta take the bag while it's available

Makes sense, he has a big lawsuit to pay off and the guys loves his kids, doubt he has a bigger driver than more time with his family. So fewer events and guaranteed money is perfect for him.

He can’t really win on the PGA tour so mine as well

Finau took part in 22 events this year and made cuts in 20 of them while picking up 5 top-10 finishes. He though did not find himself in the winners’ circle with his best finish coming at the Texas Children’s Houston Open where he was tied for second. His last victory came at the Mexico Open in 2023.
