Chris Jericho has been a cornerstone of AEW since its launch nearly six years ago. After parting ways with WWE over creative frustrations following his WrestleMania 33 snub, Jericho made a splash in NJPW with a feud against Kenny Omega. That rivalry ultimately paved the way for his signing with AEW in January 2019, where he went on to become the promotion’s first-ever World Champion just a few months later.

Jericho’s role in establishing AEW’s credibility can’t be overstated. However, he’s been absent from the company for months, with his last appearance coming in an April pay-per-view match against Bandido. Recently, speculation has begun to swirl about Jericho’s future, with fans questioning whether the veteran might be eyeing a return to his old home in WWE

In a recent appearance on Qfm96’s Torg and Elliot Show, AEW President Tony Khan was asked about Jericho’s future and timeline of return to the promotion. While Khan didn’t provide any concrete details about Jericho’s future in AEW, he made it clear how much he values the veteran’s role in the company.

Well, Chris Jericho’s been here since the very beginning, and I have so much great respect for Chris Jericho. I do really have to say, I would love to have Chris Jericho in AEW any time….The very first AEW world champion, and Chris is a huge part of the history of AEW. And still in great shape, still a great wrestler.

Sensing the answer was a bit generic, the host pressed Khan for something more substantial. That’s when he hinted Jericho’s return could be tied to a larger plan. Moreover, with WWE hellbent on counter-programming, AEW would not wish to lose one of its veterans.

Well, I think you’ve got to stay tuned to the show…that’s one of the reasons you watch the wrestling show is to see the returns, and we just talked at the beginning of the call about, you know, keeping secrets and stuff like that. So I think, stay tuned.

Just days ago, Y2J addressed the swirling rumors during an interview with the Daily Mail at Halloween Horror Nights. He praised AEW’s impact, calling its rise the best thing that can happen to wrestling. He even noted that having two major promotions benefits both wrestlers and fans.

While Jericho didn’t rule out a future WWE return, he emphasized that he remains committed to AEW for now. With his current contract reportedly expiring before year’s end, speculation about his next move continues to grow.

Jim Ross weighs in on Chris Jericho’s importance for the future of AEW

Fans may have to wait a few more months to find out if Chris Jericho will actually return to WWE. With the Stamford-based promotion set to host its 2026 Royal Rumble PLE in Saudi Arabia, the event could serve as the perfect stage for Y2J’s comeback, if it’s in the plans at all.

Elsewhere, WWE Hall of Famer and current AEW commentator Jim Ross recently shared why Chris Jericho’s departure from AEW for a WWE return would be a massive blow to the company. In a recent appearance on his Grilling JR YouTube channel, Ross explained that Jericho’s guidance is needed if Tony Khan wants to mould his young stars carefully.

He’s got a great following. He’s always treated his fans respectfully, and his quality of work maintains itself. People want to see more of him. He’s smart as a whip. He’s a real businessman. I’ve said this before, I hope that he doesn’t leave AEW. We need him.

Ross went on to explain that AEW, being just six years old, is still a young company, and Jericho serves as a guiding light for both the promotion and its rising stars. He praised Jericho’s willingness to make time for everyone, calling him a true coach.

On the other hand, stars like Booker T believe that Jericho will eventually return to the company that made him a star. On his Hall of Fame podcast, current NXT commentator said that Y2J would always have a place in WWE if he returned. He compared Jericho to stars like Edge and Christian, calling him an original and an OG who will always fit in no matter the era.
