It has been a year since WWE released controversial star Matt Riddle. The latter has been making a lot of buzz on the indie scene ever since then. Many fans thought these waves might initiate him to sign with AEW sooner rather than later. However, it has been reported that Tony Khan has no interest in having the ‘Original’ Bro aboard.
According to Fightful Select, the idea of Matt Riddle in AEW is far-fetched right now. The report suggested that AEW President Tony Khan has zero interest in signing the controversial star. These questions arise after Riddle was working with a number of talents signed with AEW. However, Fightful has pointed out that all those matches took place in Mexico-based promotions, not the US.
For well over a year, the former WWE star has worked with a number of promotions, including MLW and NJPW. It seemed for a while that any promotion was willing to sign him following his controversial exit from WWE. Moreover, he has been pretty outspoken as well recently. He even disclosed the reason behind his beef with Roman Reigns in WWE that bothered his work in the company.
Furthermore, the Original Bro’s last wrestling appearance came at the MLW Summer of Beasts event last month. He had an incredible match with Matthew Justice, where he emerged victorious. Only time will tell how the pro wrestling career of the former United States Champion will transpire after such ebbs and flows.
Matt Riddle discussed meeting with Tony Khan
Matt Riddle won the NJPW Television Championship in February this year. He had a remarkable match against Zack Sabre Jr. at Windy City Riot in April, where he dropped the title to him. It was noted that Riddle had a meeting with Tony Khan later on that night. That meeting sparked the rumors of the Original Bro heading to AEW.
Speaking with Sport Illustrated recently, the former WWE star detailed his interaction with the AEW President. Matt added that he felt like Khan didn’t like him, and he was perplexed during the interaction. The 38-year-old star averred that he walked away from Tony after that awkward interaction backstage.
When you meet me, I’m very sarcastic. But when I met him, I was like, ‘Oh, you like that match’? But I said it a different way, and he looked at me all confused. And I was like, ‘Never mind, dude.’ I just walked away. So that was my experience with that.

Riddle has also claimed that he would be open to returning to WWE. Having said that, only time will tell if his success on the independent circuit would help Riddle in getting any significant deal after being embroiled in several controversies for a long time.
