Tony Romo is once again facing the allegations of favoring the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes unnecessarily. Despite being among the best TV analysts, Romo often comes under scrutiny over his biases towards them and it happened again, in the recent Sunday game.
The Chiefs had a slow start in the match against the Cincinnati Bengals. While facing a 2nd-and-4th play from the Bengals’ six-yard line, superstar Mahomes was aiming for a touchdown by connecting with tight end Travis Kelce. However, it was found to be ill-advised as the pass ended up being short and Kelce couldn’t catch it.
Surprisingly, Romo labeled this play as a “winning play” suggesting that Mahomes purposely made the throw short, in order to avoid an interception.
This is Mahomes throwing it in the dirt on purpose. He’s got such great instincts. It’s a winning play.Tony Romo said from the CBS Sports broadcasting booth
Romo’s blind support for last season’s Super Bowl MVP didn’t sit well with the fans, nor it did among the commentators. As they admitted that while they love Mahomes, the play was absolutely ill-advised and he regretted it when it fell short.
Many fans didn’t hold back from calling out Romo for his unreasonable bias-ness towards Mahomes as one fan wrote, “He’s openly rooting for the Chiefs every game he announces.” While another demanded, “Fire Tony Romo.”
Here are some of the fan reactions:
Nonetheless, the Chiefs won the game, which was a close victory against the Bengals at 26-25. Mahomes finished the game by completing 18 out of his 25 passes for 151 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Controversy erupts as Patrick Mahomes’ interception called back due to penalty
This wasn’t the only controversial moment from Sunday’s game, as many called out the referees for not counting Mahomes’ third interception by imposing a defensive penalty. Fans have been calling it an unfair advantage to the Chiefs’ elite quarterback as WGR 550 reporter Joe DiBiase showed a statistical report where this interception was the 17th in his career which was called back.
This report caused a huge backlash on social media, as many argued that Mahomes should have been credited with his third interception. They also pointed out that the three-time Super Bowl champion’s performance was quite average as he posted the second-lowest yards of his career.
The lowest yards in a game logged by Mahomes remain a 2019 match against the Denver Broncos where he posted 96 yards despite his team’s remarkable feat of 30-6. In addition to his below 100-yard stats, he also sustained a knee injury in that game, but still, he led the team to the playoffs that season.
