The NASCAR community was shocked when it was announced that championship-winning team Stewart Haas Racing would cease its operations at the end of the 2024 season. Tony Stewart and co-owner Gene Haas were set to exit NASCAR for good amidst the financial struggles.
But after a few weeks of the SHR announcement, Gene Haas announced that he would field cars under the Haas Factory Team brand from next season. He is doing this by retaining one of the SHR charters. Now Tony Stewart has revealed who convinced Haas to stay in NASCAR.
He asserted that Haas’s close friend, business associate, and founding member of SHR, Joe Custer convinced the millionaire to remain in NASCAR. The veteran also comes forward defending the team’s decision to sign Joe’s son as their 2025 driver asserting the defending Xfinity champion Cole Custer deserves the seat.
Joe Custer does what Joe Custer does best. He’s a motivator, and he makes things happen when he wants to, and convinced Gene to keep one of the charters to put Cole back in the car. It’s good for Cole because Cole deserves it.Tony Stewart said via Query and Company radio show.
Tony Stewart reveals the reason for his NHRA success in 2024
The NASCAR-IndyCar champion is in his rookie NHRA top-tier season. He replaced his wife, who is pregnant with their son and has been fine. The help and coaching he gets from Leah makes him a better racer.
So when we make a run if there’s anything that she can pick apart and see that I don’t do it 100% right, she absolutely knows that I want her to tell me. She’s been an excellent coach, and honestly, it’s been the reason we’ve been successful this year.Tony Stewart said.
With the SHR responsibility off his shoulders, Tony Stewart can dedicate most of his time to his drag racing activities and raising his son. It might be for the good that he decided to end his time in NASCAR as a team owner.
