Things escalated to an ugly note during Sunday’s game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans, when Azeez Al-Shaair in a brutal hit caused Trevor Lawrence’s concussion, followed by a heated brawl among the players that resulted in Jaguars rookie Jarrian Jones to give a hard punch to a rival player.
Despite being ejected alongside the Texans’ Al-Shaair, Jones admitted still not regretting his punch when his team came together to take revenge for quarterback Lawrence lying motionless on the football field. And if it happens again, he wouldn’t think twice before stepping into his team’s defense during Sunday’s 23-20 loss.
“I threw a little something in there,” said Jones before admitting to regret being ejected for punching a Texas player.
While the Jaguars’ Al-Shaair has been suspended for three games, Jones is awaiting the final decision on the fine amount for his punch. Meanwhile, Lawrence has been put on the injury reserve for a serious concussion and is expected to miss the remaining 2024 season.
Jarrian Jones aside, Jaguars defend Trevor Lawrence while Texans back Azeez Al-Shaair amid controversy
There have been debates about whether it was Lawrence’s fault in sustaining the concussion as he attempted to slide to the turf when the opposing linebacker hit his facemask with his elbow. This was also Houston’s reason for appealing against the punishment imposed on Al-Shaair.
However, their appeal request was denied citing “unacceptable and serious violation of the playing rules.” When the cornerback addressed the media, he was also asked if he believes the Jaguars overacted on the hit endured by the team’s quarterback as Texans’ head coach DeMeco Ryans said post-game.
While the Jagaurs reacted in defense of their quarterback, the entire Texans organization is sticking by the linebacker and criticizing the NFL’s decision to punish him vigorously. Despite the heated incident, the game couldn’t turn out in the Jaguars’ favor, sinking them to a 2-10 record while the Texans improved to 8-5.
