As the situation regarding US Open is catching pace, a decision on the future of this Grand Slam event is expected soon. According to reports in Marca, the USTA and the ATP has held an online conference with the top male players to discuss about the event.
It is being reported that the top 20 players have taken a stand. They have made it clear that they are not in favor of traveling for the US Open until and unless rules regarding quarantine were not made clear.
Besides, in the last few weeks, many players like Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios have decided against traveling for the event because of the rules.
Top ATP players want clarity on quarantine
One of the reason is also that if these players play the US Open, their participation in the European clay-court swing will be in doubt. The French Open will start exactly two weeks after the US Open ends. Additionally, the Rome Masters is scheduled in between.
Earlier, reports have suggested that world number one Novak Djokovic wanted clarity from the ATP and the other concerned authorities over the quarantine rules. Djokovic is also the president of the ATP Players’ council. So, it seems that quarantine rules seem to be the top concern for these tennis players.
US Open could miss Top 20 male players
Almost all the European players are more inclined towards skipping the US Open. They do not want to jeopardize their participation in the clay-court events. The reports by Marca further suggest that the players are very firm on the point regarding quarantine rules.
It is being reported that the top 20 players have informed the ATP and USTA that they will not travel to New York, if forced by a 14-day quarantine period.
The USTA had updated a point last week in its list of protocols. It said that if a member on a player’s team is COVID-19 positive, the player will be disqualified from the Western and Southern Open and the US Open.
