The 2024 WTA season witnessed some stellar and memorable moments on the court. Just like Magdalena Frech, who made her professional debut in 2013, won her first title this year at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico. Suzan Lamens, who began the year as World No. 207, claimed the Japan Open despite coming through the qualifying stage.
There were 12 first-time WTA champions this year. Indeed, Russia’s Diana Shnaider was the most impressive of all, as she went on to claim three more titles after her first at the Thailand Open. Let us take a look at the Top 3 players to win their first WTA title this season.
3) Diana Shnaider – Thailand Open
Diana Shnaider reached her first career final at the Ningbo Open in 2023 but failed to win the title after losing to Ons Jabeur. However, 2024 was a season to remember for the Russian star. She opened her career account at the Thailand Open in February by beating Zhu Lin to claim the WTA 250 title.

The 20-year-old didn’t slow down after. In June, she defeated silver Olympic medalist Donna Vekic to win the Bad Homburg Open, her maiden WTA 500 victory. She then won her first clay court title at the Budapest Grand Prix before ending the year with another title at the Hong Kong Tennis Open in November.
2) Mirra Andreeva – Iași Open
In 2023, Mirra Andreeva won the Newcomer of the Year Award after bursting into the season in the WTA to become the youngest player in the Top 60. This season, she took a giant step in the right direction. She reached the semifinals of the Paris Olympics doubles and then the semifinals of the French Open.

She earned her biggest career victory by beating Aryna Sabalenka at the Roland Garros. The 17-year-old claimed her maiden WTA title after beating Elina Avanesyan at the WTA 250 event in Romania to win the Iasi Open.
Andreeva wrapped up her year by reaching her second final at the Ningbo Open. However, she failed to win the title after losing to Daria Kasatkina. She finished the year as World No. 16 in the WTA rankings.
3) Emma Navarro – Hobart International
Emma Navarro began the 2024 season as the World No. 31 and ended the year at a career-high No. 8 in the WTA rankings. She failed to secure a place in the WTA Finals only because of Barbora Krejcikova taking the eighth spot for winning the Wimbledon Championships in July.

The American earned her first career title at the WTA 250 Hobart International following her 6–1, 4–6, 7–5 victory over Elise Mertens in the final. Although she didn’t reach another final, Navarro reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open but lost to eventual champion Sabalenka. She also reached the last eight of the Wimbledon Championships.
