There were several WTA players who came close to winning their first title on the tour and then there were those who chased their first Grand Slam singles title but failed. They are now preparing to win those coveted cups when the next season starts in 2025.
World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka was the most successful WTA player in terms of Grand Slam singles titles won in 2024. She won two Majors, both on the hard courts – her second Australian Open and her first US Open.
World No.2 Iga Swiatek dominated on the clay courts, winning three consecutive titles, including her fourth French Open. Barbora Krejcikova was not even one of the dark horses when the 2024 season started but she surprised everyone by clinching the Wimbledon, her second Major title after her 2021 French Open win.
Qinwen Zheng, Jasmine Paolini, and Jessica Pegula also played impressive tennis throughout the season and even qualified for the WTA Finals. These three are the players who are predicted to grab their first-ever Grand Slam singles title in 2025.
Jasmine Paolini reached two Grand Slam finals
Jasmine Paolini ended the 2024 season as a World No.4, her career-best ranking thanks to her incredible campaign during the summer. She won the title in Dubai and a few months later, she played her first Grand Slam singles final.
The 28-year-old advanced to the summit clash of the French Open but lost in straight sets to Iga Swiatek. Next month, the tennis world saw her reach back-to-back Grand Slam singles finals. She was defeated by Barbora Krejcikova in three sets at Wimbledon. Paolini made deep runs in several tournaments and even qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time.
Jessica Pegula played US Open final
Before this year, Jessica Pegula failed to reach a Grand Slam singles semifinal. At the US Open however, the World No.7, she beat Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals, won the semifinals, and reached the summit clash where Aryna Sabalenka defeated her in straight sets.
Pegula won two titles in 2024, the Canadian Open and the Berlin Open. She also played the final at the Cincinnati Open which she lost to Sabalenka.
Qinwen Zheng reached Australian Open final
Qinwen Zheng wasn’t one of the favorites at the 2024 Australian Open but she made deep runs and eventually reached the final. There she couldn’t overcome defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Zheng won titles in Palermo and Tokyo but her best achievement was the Olympic gold medal which she clinched after beating Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. The Chinese sensation also progressed to finals at the Wuhan Open and WTA Finals but lost to Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, respectively.
