Top 5 current Indian Test players who might never play again in limited-overs cricket
India is one of the most competitive cricket teams across all three formats in the world. The national side has reached great heights over the years in the international arena. Moreover, a mixture of experienced players alongside exciting youngsters provides a perfect balance to the ‘Men in Blue’.
However, getting a spot in the national side is not an easy nut to crack and retaining that position is even more difficult. With specialist players for all three formats, let’s look at some of the top current Indian Test players who might never play again in limited-overs cricket.
Cheteshwar Pujara
India’s most dependable batsman in Test cricket, Cheteshwar Pujara finds it tough to make it to the limited-overs format. His batting style makes him unsuitable in the national side for the ODIs and T20Is. The 32-year old has played five One Day International matches, scoring 51 runs at a forgettable average of 10. Moreover, he doesn’t play for any Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise as well.
Ajinkya Rahane
India’s vice-captain in the longer format, Ajinkya Rahane is not a member of the current national side in ODIs and T20Is. Rahane has decent numbers to his name in the latter two forms of cricket, however, his inability to accelerate the innings fails his chances to grab a spot. Moreover, he had a forgettable last IPL season while playing for Delhi Capitals.
Ravichandran Ashwin
One of the best spinners in world cricket at the moment, Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped from the shorter formats. Ashwin has a substantial record in limited-overs, especially One Day games. However, after the decision of playing wrist spinners in the side, the team management dropped him from the squad. The 32-year-old currently plays for Delhi Capitals in IPL and, performed well during the 2020 edition.
Ishant Sharma
Delhi-born Ishant Sharma is India’s lead pace bowler in Test cricket. He is currently in his peak form from the past some years. However, Sharma fails to find a spot in the shorter format matches as there are already many players in the reckoning ahead of him. Also, with his recurring injuries, the team management would want him to concentrate on one format only.
Wriddhiman Saha
The 36-year old Wriddhiman Saha is one of the best wicket-keepers in the world right now. His skills and glove work behind the stumps is second to none. Saha is the number one choice player for team India at this position in Test cricket but fails to make it to the side in the remaining formats. Moreover, his age makes it difficult for him to make a comeback in ODIs or T20Is.
