The Indian team will tour Australia for a two-month-long series beginning from the end of this month. The India-Australia series will begin with the first One Day International (ODI), played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The intensity is always at its peak when it comes to the clash between these two sides.

Most players keep the rivalry between India and Australia right up there with the Ashes or the India-Pakistan clash. Now, let’s look at the top 5 One Day matches that took place between these two nations.

India vs Australia (Titan Cup) 1996 | 3rd ODI | M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru

Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble

The Indian bowlers did a commendable job to keep the Aussie batsmen quiet to a below-par total of 215/7. Australian skipper Mark Taylor emerged as the best batsman for them with his score of 105 in 144 deliveries.

The Indian team didn’t have a great start after as they were struggling at 47/4 before Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja revived their hopes. Following this, India got reduced to 164/8 at one stage but Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble got them back on course with an invaluable partnership. The duo took India home in a nail-biting victory with seven deliveries to spare.

India vs Australia 2009 | 5th ODI | Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

The Australian team posted a mammoth total of 350/4 after electing to bat first on a flat track. Shaun Marsh struck a brilliant 112 while Shane Watson and Cameron While also smashed half-centuries. In reply, Sachin Tendulkar single-handedly led the run-chase for his side with a blissful knock of 175.

In the end, India fell just three runs short of the target after a batting collapse in the lower order. Sachin also completed his 17,000 run mark in the ODIs during his 175.

India vs Australia ( World Cup) 2011 | 2nd Quarter-Finals | Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad

The Indian team faced defending champions Australia in the quarter-finals match of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting led his team to 260 for six with a scintillating century in Ahmedabad.

His knock went in vain against the half-centuries from Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh. After many twists and turns, India clinched the game thanks to an unbeaten 74-run partnership between Yuvraj and Suresh Raina. India went on to lift the trophy after beating Pakistan (semi-finals) and Sri Lanka in the finals.

India vs Australia 2013 | 2nd ODI | Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur

Batting first, Australia posted a gigantic total of 359/5 at the end of their 50 overs against a failed Indian bowling attack. Each of the top five Australian batsmen scored half-centuries during that inning in Jaipur. However, the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan provided their team with the much-needed start as they indulged in a 176-run partnership.

Virat Kohli scored 100 off just 52 deliveries (fastest by an Indian batsman) while batting at number three. As a result, India clinched the game with nine wickets in hand and 6.3 overs to spare.

India vs Australia 2017 | 1st ODI | M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

The Indian team got squeezed to 87/5 while batting first during the inaugural ODI of the 2017 series. However, MS Dhoni partnered with all-rounder Hardik Pandya to help the Men in Blue post a match-winning total of 281/7. In the meanwhile, Dhoni completed his 100th ODI fifty while Pandya recorded his highest score in the 50-over format.

The target got cut down to 164 from 21 overs in a rain-affected game for the visitors. However, they could only score 137/9 after a brilliant bowling effort from the Indian players. Pandya won the ‘Man of the Match’ award for his all-round performance in the clash.
