The Caesars Superdome crowd on Sunday (February 9) got a glimpse of Serena Williams performing the iconic crip walk at Super Bowl LIX. While the Philadelphia Eagles denied the Kansas City Chiefs their historic third win by dismantling them 40-22, it was Williams who stole the halftime show.
When Kendrick Lamar was performing his Grammy-winning Drake diss track ‘Not Like Us’, the exhilarated crowd saw Williams crip-walking and the moment was indeed electrifying, for probably no one had expected her to appear. Williams and Lamar are from Compton, where the crip walk originated.
And another reason behind her appearance was Drake, who was rumored to be in a relationship with her. Top tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg was also entertained by her performance and he later took to X to take a cheeky jibe at Drake.

Williams had performed a crip walk at Wimbledon back in 2012 following her win over Maria Sharapova in the final of the London Olympics. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, after her Super Bowl cameo, joked that she would have been slapped with a fine if she produced a similar crip walk at Wimbledon.
Ben Rothenberg claims Drake was serious about Serena Williams
Ben Rothenberg wrote in detail about the time Drake was dating Serena Williams. Rothenberg claimed Drake wouldn’t just leave Williams alone and would follow her everywhere, including in press conferences.
Drake was clearly very, very into Serena, but it was never clear how serious Serena was about him. As it happened, Serena had already met her future husband, Alexis Ohanian, a few months earlier in Rome.

Drake ridiculed Ohanian by calling him a ‘groupie’ in his 2022 song ‘Middle of the Ocean’. Rothenberg slammed Drake for addressing a man, who was married and had a kid, as a ‘groupie’, in the aforementioned article. Williams met Reddit co-founder Ohanian in 2015 and two years later, they got married. The couple has two daughters together, Olympia and Adira.
After the Super Bowl, Ohanian, who is very active on social media, took to X to laud Kendrick Lamar’s performance and also took a dig at those who criticized Williams. He also took a cheeky jibe at Stephen A. Smith for his controversial remarks on Williams’ performance.
Williams also made headlines for not shying away from showing her support for Taylor Swift. The American pop star, who was cheering for her boyfriend, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, and received boos from a section of the crowd when she appeared on the jumbotron was told not to pay any heed to the crowd by Williams.
