Edge and Orton in "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever" at Backlash 2020
WWE is now gearing up for their next PPV, titled Wrestlemania Backlash. The inaugural Backlash was held in 1999, following Wrestlemania XV. The PPV has gained the reputation of putting out hardcore matches, and has delivered some classic matches.
WWE had decided to scrap the PPV after 2009, but it made a return in 2016. The event also featured the “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” at Backlash 2020. Randy Orton defeated Edge in one of the best wrestling bouts ever. But apart from that the PPV has also delivered some classics.

#5 Batista vs. The Undertaker – Backlash 2007
“The Animal” Batista had a historic feud against The Undertaker. They collided at Backlash 2007 for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a Last Man Standing match. The two legends delivered an intense brawl.
The Undertaker had dominated a major part of the match and even leg dropped Batista through the announce table. Despite the match ending in a draw, it is considered to be an all-time classic.
#4 Dean Ambrose vs. AJ Styles – Backlash 2016
AJ Styles made history at WWE Backlash 2016, when he defeated Dean Ambrose to become the WWE Champion. It took him just 8 months since his debut at WWE, to win the title.
The match is considered to be one of the best matches of Styles and Ambrose’s WWE career. The win over ‘The Lunatic Fringe’ marked the beginning of Styles taking over Smackdown as “The House that AJ Styles built.”
#3 John Cena vs. Edge vs. Triple H – Backlash 2006
This match took place at the peak of WWE’s Ruthless Aggression. The three men had developed some strong chemistry with each other and the proved the same in this match at Backlash 2006.
In the early stages of the match, Edge decided to take a back seat and let Cena and Triple H battle inside the ring. But when he entered the match, it became a bloodbath. Triple H was busted open and went on a full-out rampage.
But Cena managed to retain the title. After the match, Triple H hit the referee and his opponents with his iconic sledgehammer.
#2 John Cena vs. Edge – Backlash 2009
WWE’s biggest rivals John Cena and Edge gave a classic showdown at Backlash 2009. They faced each other in a Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Championship. The match was brutal even without any bloodshed.
One of the highlights of the match was The Big Show chokeslamming Cena through a spotlight. Edge ended up winning the Heavyweight Championship.
#1 Randy Orton vs. Mick Foley – Backlash 2004
This is one of the greatest matches in Backlash history. The greatest hardcore wrestler, Mick Foley faced Randy Orton, who was a rising star then. Orton was getting a massive push from the company and this match could be considered to be the turning point of his career.
Orton walked in as the Intercontinental Champion and managed to retain his title in the most gruesome manner. They went all out with barbwire bats, barbwire tables and thumbtacks. Foley dropped Orton on thumbtacks and was hit with a RKO on a barbwire bat.
This year, the Backlash PPV has been title Wrestlemania Backlash and will air live on 16th May, 2021.
