Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou commented for the first time on midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur’s punishment for a racist remark aimed at Son-Heung min. The Australian exclaimed that Bentancur must be given an opportunity to learn from his mistakes.

Rodrigo Bentancur was handed a seven-match suspension and a hefty fine of £100,000 by the FA. The 27-year-old midfielder had, in an interview on Uruguayan television, aimed a racist jibe at Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min. He had mocked Son over his Asian roots, while humorously exclaiming that all South Koreans look the same. Despite Bentancur having apologized to Son, an independent commission held him guilty. Along with the ban, he has also been directed to undertake an FA education course.

Tottenham have however, appealed against the ban, terming it as ‘severe’. The club also referred to FA’s rules, which mandates only a six-match ban for racism. Speaking to reporters about the incident, manager Ange Postecoglou agreed that Bentancur did make a mistake, and was ready to face the consequences. However, he labeled the seven-match ban, a bit harsh. Highlighting FA’s judgement, he stated that even those with all facts often judge harshly. This, he stated reflected society’s tendency to rush to conclusion.

I’m not interested in [how it] looks. I’ve said all along, he’s made a mistake… The first one was a little bit harsh so we’ve appealed that, which I think is our right… I’ve made bigger mistakes than that.

Rodrigo Bentancur will miss out on the club’s next few matches. It will include a few crucial encounters, against Manchester City, AS Roma and Chelsea. Meanwhile, the team will also be without their two first-choice center-backs, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, during their trip to Man City.

Manchester City under Pep Guardiola have dominated the EPL over the last few seasons, winning four titles in a row. Ange Postecoglou, however, claimed that his side, who are currently on the 10th position in the EPL table, can end City’s dominance. Moreover, he added excitement in knocking off Pep Guardiola, who has often been labelled as an all-time great among managers, off the top.

I look at it the other way – ‘imagine you knock him off?’ That would be something, eh? And I’m at the stage of my life where I’d rather have a chance of knocking him off than missing that opportunity.
