Tottenham Hotspur claimed a stunning 2-1 victory over Manchester City, eliminating them out of the Carabao Cup. It marked manager Ange Postecoglou’s first win over Pep Guardiola and his men, setting up a quarter-final encounter with Manchester United.
Spurs started the match on a very strong note, with forward Timo Werner scoring his first goal of the new season. The 28-year-old gave the home side an advantage in the very 5th minute, as he struck the back of the net with an emphatic finish.
Pape Sarr doubled Tottenham’s lead just 20 minutes later with a low right-footed shot from 25 yards out. Despite Matheus Nunes pulling one back for the visitors at half-time, Tottenham went on to steal a massive victory, qualifying for the next round.
The home side could have added to the goals, but were blocked by Manchester City keeper Stefan Ortega, who produced some fine saves. Goalscorer Timo Werner, however, had to be taken off, as he suffered a groin muscle injury.
Meanwhile, Spurs’ win came as a sign of relief for manager Ange Postecoglou, who had promised to deliver a trophy in his second season, ending a long-standing trophy drought. Spurs have been without a trophy since 2008, as they edge closer to the 2024-25 Carabao Cup.

Moreover, their recent win comes off the back of a poor start to the new EPL season. Tottenham are currently in the 8th position on the Premier League table, with just 13 points from nine matches. They next face a tough challenge in 4th-placed Aston Villa, at home.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Micky van de Ven reduced to tears while being substituted with a hamstring injury
Micky van de Ven was reduced to tears as he was being substituted in the early minutes of Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Carabao Cup. The center-back had to come off after just 12 minutes, due to a serious hamstring injury.
After falling to the ground, the 23-year-old initially received treatment on the field, but had to step out after physios confirmed the seriousness of his injury. Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that the Dutchman would be out for some time. Center-back Cristian Romero also had to be taken off in the second half, after he complained of fatigue.

This could be a serious worry for the Australian boss, who could be faced with a selection dilemma. In Van de Ven’s absence, Romanian starlet Radu Dragusin, who has impressed at times, could be asked to fill up for his injured teammate.
