As club football resumed following the International break, things have gone from bad to worse for Manchester City. Already on a four-game losing streak, Pep Guardiola and co. suffered their first loss on the run against Tottenham Hotspur, that too by a humiliating margin of four goals to none.

As things stand, City are five points behind League leaders Liverpool, although the Reds have a game in hand. Things started to go wrong for City in the 13th minute of the game, when James Maddison opened the scoring.

The Englishman got on the end of a cross from Dejan Kulusevski as he passed the ball into the net via a volley. His second didn’t take long either, as he chipped the ball over Ederson to make it 2-0 in the 20th minute.

The second half featured more of the same as Pedro Porro converted a powerful strike from inside the penalty area. Already on the verge of humiliation, all hopes of a City comeback were put to bed when Brennan Johnson tapped the ball in at the far post to make it 4-0. Timo Werner flew past Kyle Walker as he set up Johnson for his second assist of the season.

Pep Guardiola admits not being ‘good enough’ to resuscitate Manchester City

Manchester City have hit their ‘worst’ run of form in the last 18 years. Pep Guardiola has lost five consecutive games for the first time ever in his managerial career, as City now risk missing out on the Premier League title to rivals Liverpool.

With the possibility of humiliation against Liverpool over the horizon, Guardiola himself has suggested that he may not be ‘good enough’ for City.

When you lose three Premier League games in a row, the wrong thing to say is that we’re going to be champions. Maybe I’m not good enough to get back in that situation.

The Spaniard, however, has time and again downplayed himself in press conferences, only to make unbelievable comebacks to claim the PL title in previous seasons. While fans certainly expect the Cityzens to make a spectacular comeback, their current situation is far from ideal.

Following the win over City, Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou expressed his surprise at the ‘ease’ with which his side dismantled the reigning champions. As things stand, a win for Liverpool against Southampton today will put them eight points clear at the top.
