Tottenham Hotspur defeated Wycombe Wanderers 4-1 in the fourth round of FA Cup. The score-line does not justify Wycombe’s efforts in the match who matched Tottenham for most parts of the match.

Wycombe took an unexpected lead in the first half, but Tottenham finally equalized through Bale on the edge of half time. The match was equally poised at 1-1 until the 85th minute but 3 goals in final 5 minutes proved to be the difference at the end.

Gareth Bale returned for Tottenham and lasted the whole match

The difference in quality between Tottenham and the Championship side, Wycombe was clearly evident in the substitutes named on the bench by both sides. Mourinho named a second string starting 11 which still included Bale, Lucas and Vinicius upfront. The luxuries on the bench for Mourinho included Kane, Son, Bergwijn, Ndombele and Hojberg.

Jose Mourinho was desperate to avoid extra time keeping in mind the mid-week fixture against Liverpool in the Premier League. The cavalry was brought onto the field by Mourinho as he unleashed Kane, Son and Ndombele in the 2nd half.

Gareth Bale, who was a fitness worry going into the fixture lasted the whole 90 minutes. He was wasteful in the early stages of the game but found his feet as the match progressed. Bale scored the equalizer and dropped his best performance in a Spurs’ shirt since returning from Madrid.

Mourinho praised his star forward in his post-match conference. Bale returned to the starting lineup after a long layoff due to injury

“He looked good, taking on players, scored the goal. I never felt that he could not play 90 minutes, I never felt I had to take him off.”

“The Championship is a good level. That is good. I am happy.”

Mourinho’s Tottenham next face Liverpool in the Premier League on Thursday. Jose will look for a victory, after the first round belonged to Klopp, when the sides met earlier. A win will help Tottenham close the gap at the top of the table. Tottenham are currently 5th in the League.
