Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur provided a positive update from the hospital after collapsing on the pitch during the club’s EFL Cup encounter against Liverpool. The 27-year-old had fallen unconscious for a few minutes following the frightening collapse.

Six minutes into the match against Liverpool, Bentancur attempted to head the ball into the Reds’ goal but missed his target. He fell awkwardly onto the ground unchallenged and was left motionless for the next few seconds. Teammate Pedro Porro immediately rushed to his assistance. The other Spurs’ players signaled for the medical team to get onto the pitch.

Bentancur was treated by the medics on the pitch for nine minutes. The Uruguayan was later stretchered off the pitch, with oxygen and neck support, while being replaced by Brennan Johnson. Manager Ange Postecoglou revealed that the midfielder gained consciousness in the dressing room. He was rushed to a London hospital for further scans. Reports indicate that he might have suffered a concussion.

Early the next morning after the incident, the ex-Juventus midfielder took to social media to share a positive update on his health. He posted a picture of himself, smiling on the hospital bed along with his fiancee Melany La Blanca, reassuring fans of his condition. Moreover, Postecoglou later stated that the player has returned home in good health after a series of tests and protocols. 

Rodrigo Bentancur will remain out of action for the next few weeks. Unfortunately, it adds to the club’s long list of injured players this season. Bentancur had recently returned from a seven-match ban that he received for using a racial slur aimed at Tottenham skipper Son-Heung min.

The home side received an early setback, losing midfielder Bentancur to an injury. Midfielder Lucas Bergvall scored his first goal for Spurs in the 86th minute of the match. It allows his team to take a narrow lead ahead of the second leg. He scored a decisive strike into the bottom right corner past Alisson Becker, helped by an assist from Dominic Solanke. 

Moreover, Liverpool boss Arne Slot left as a frustrated figure after the match. The club suffered its second defeat of the season. The Reds will be hoping to make a comeback in the second leg next month at Anfield.
