Tottenham skipper Son Heung-Min blasted out at football bodies for the increasing number of fixtures in this season. Moreover, he criticized the inflated workload on players, and urged football authorities to take the issue seriously.
Son Heung-Min is among the long list of players who have spoken out against the increased number of matches and the additional workload on players. This is owing to the recent change in the UCL format, from the group stage one to a new league phase, alongside the revamped FIFA Club World Cup format. He echoed the concerns, similarly put forward by Manchester City midfielder Rodri, who most recently suffered a season-ending injury, over the increased workload on players.
Highlighting fatigue and player congestion as major issues, Son backed the other Premier League stars who spoke on this issue. He stated that fans should enjoy the season with limited matches, but with fewer number of injured players, and quality play, rather than overburdening the players. Stating that the players are not ‘robots’ and need to keep travelling for matches, he informed that reduction in matches would help players in balancing their mentality as well as their physicality.
