South Korean forward and Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min’s father and brother have been charged with child abuse at a football academy. The father-son duo have been ordered to pay a hefty fine for physical and verbal abuse by a Korean court.
Son Heung-min’s dad Son Woong-jung and brother Heung-yun Son have been reportedly fined €2200 as well as ordered to complete 40 hours in an educational programme, by the Chuncheon District Court for violating child welfare laws, along with an unnamed coach. They have been accused of violating the laws at the Son Football Academy in Chuncheon. These allegations emerged after the parents of a 12-year-old trainee complained of physical and verbal abuse by two coaches, at the famed football academy.
Son Woong serves as the director of the academy that opened in 2021. He had initially denied any wrongdoing, but later offered an apology in court while also vowing to review his coaching methods. Son Heung-min’s father and brother had been accused a few months back, after the parents of another young player complained that their son was hit by a corner flag in the thigh during a training camp in Japan. This has definitely brought shame to the South Korean forward and his family.

The father-son duo have also been charged with using profane language at young players when they make mistakes while training. With Son’s father having stated that he acts with children ‘out of love’, he and the other two accused are expected to appeal against the decision.
Son Heung-min’s injury news emerges ahead of Tottenham’s clash against West Ham
Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min’s thigh injury means that he remains a doubt for the club’s upcoming North London derby encounter against West Ham. The South Korean forward will need to pass a fitness test prior to the match.
Son Heung-min missed two of South Korea’s World Cup qualifier matches against Jordan and Iraq, but is set to return to the club setup for their EPL campaign. However, the forward playing the full 90 minutes of the match against the Hammers, will depend on how he turns up in training, with the injury being defined by team doctors as a non-serious one.
However, the club must be careful to not rush Son back, given how important he is to Ange Postecoglou and the team. He has already scored two goals and provided two assists in seven matches, this season.
