Tour of Chile: India women’s junior hockey team beats Chile senior side to end the tour undefeated
Indian women's hockey team
On Sunday, the India womens junior hockey team pipped the Chile senior side 2-1 in their sixth and final match to end their tour of Chile undefeated. The national team’s winning streak included 5 victories and 1 draw.
India started proceedings on the front foot as they mounted pressure on the hosts. Indian forward Beauty Dungdung converted a beautiful team move to score the opening goal in the 6th minute. The second quarter also saw India creating opportunities. The team’s efforts were rewarded as Dungdung again scored a goal. This time she capitalized on a penalty corner in the 26th minute. The goal extended India’s lead over Chile to 2 goals.
However, India’s dominance in the match came under threat just two minutes later. Chile was awarded a penalty corner for an infringement inside the striking circle by the visitors. But India’s defensive skills rescued them from the sticky situation.
The thrilling final quarters
The situation on field changed entirely as Chile took charge of the proceedings in the third quarter. They built pressure on the Indian defense by keeping possession. But it was only in the 40th minute that the hosts were able to make use of their dominance as they pulled a goal back through Francisca Tala.
Chile’s senior team tried to force it’s way back into the match in the last quarter as well. But India showed incredible grit and resilience to not concede an equalizer. With six minutes to wrap up the match, Chile found a glimmer of hope through a penalty corner. But India maintained a solid back-line to keep the score 2-1 in their favour and win the match.
The match was held at the Prince of Wales Country Club.
