The NBA playoffs are on and Trae Young will not be playing in them for the second straight season. This seems to be a fall from grace for the Atlanta Hawks star, who had signature playoff moments for three straight seasons. A part of the blame can be assigned to the Hawks, who have not had a good roster of late. Another part of the blame lies on injuries, which have derailed much that Atlanta’s got going on.

As a result, NBA analysts are fast forgetting how electrifying Trae Young can be to watch. Young came to the NBA on the back of being the only man to lead the NCAA in scoring and assists. But there has already been a rewriting of his strengths in the minds of some NBA analysts. Specifically, former Clippers and Celtics starter Marcus Morris had a few things to say about the current state of NBA point guard play.

According to Morris, there are very few true point guards currently in the NBA. The combo forward tried to imply that pass-first players are essentially extinct in the league, while praising Tyrese Haliburton. However, former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins stepped in to check Morris, reminding him of Trae Young. Morris, apparently too prideful to admit his mistake, tried to insinuate that Young had only recently become a pass-first player.

Fans now know that stars scroll through Twitter/X, and are often drawn into threads about their own play. Trae Young is no different, and he came across this take from Marcus Morris on First Take this morning. After being slightly flabbergasted by the whole conversation, Young attempted to bring the conversation back to facts:

Love Marcus, but this is why it’s important to WIN at a high level & win consistently kids. Human nature to live in the moment! This how bad narratives are made though.. “just started passing”? Let’s do our research.

Young has every right to correct the course of this conversation. Through seven years of NBA play, Young has improved his assist output for every single season, bar none. He won the assists title this season after averaging a mind-numbing 11.6 assists per game. This was his third straight season averaging over 10 assists per game.

Trae Young is in basketball purgatory with the Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks have a lot more going on for them than other NBA franchises. They are in a city dominated by black culture, one that would be welcoming to many free agents. Although not as big as the top three NBA cities, the Hawks are also quite beloved within their city and have a huge fanbase. They also have a certain degree of cultural relevance within Atlanta due to the burgeoning hip-hop scene.

However, the team has not had any real playoff success throughout its tenure in Atlanta. The Hawks have an NBA title, but this is from the 1950s, when they were based in St. Louis, Missouri. Since their move to the most black-dominated urban area in the USA, the Hawks have not progressed beyond the Conference Finals.

Trae Young is an All-NBA caliber player currently right in the middle of his athletic prime. He needs more support from the players around him and on his roster to make a serious championship push. The Hawks have regressed from making the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals to now being merely play-in threats. While Jalen Johnson is a good addition, they need more to happen in order to become serious playoff threats.
