- Trae Young responded to NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's jab about high ticket prices, referencing past comments from a former mayor.
- Young's rivalry with Knicks fans intensified after he led the Hawks to eliminate the Knicks in the 2021 playoffs.
- After being traded to the Wizards, Young has struggled to regain his previous form, making only five appearances for his new team.
Trae Young and the New York Knicks have a complicated relationship with one another. Some would even label it as a hateful relationship, as there is arguably no other player the Knicks fans dislike more than Young.
Recently, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked about the very high ticket pricing at Madison Square Garden during the playoffs. Mamdani blamed the former Atlanta Hawks guard for the price hike in a hilarious jab. Young took notice of Mamdani’s comments and had a response of his own.
Remember what happened the last time the Mayor of that City had my name in his mouth during a time like this.

Remember what happened the last time the Mayor of that City had my name in his mouth during a time like this… 😂✋🏽. #DontBlameMeWhenItHappensAgain

The statement from Trae Young refers to Bill de Blasio, the city’s mayor in 2021, who publicly addressed Young. He said Young should stop hunting for fouls.
The strained relationship between the player and the franchise began back in 2021. Young and the Hawks took on the Knicks in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. The guard put on a show and knocked out the Knicks in five games. That series turned Young into a villain for life amongst Knicks fans.
It has been five years since the series. However, Young has never missed the opportunity to poke fun and troll the Knicks fanbase to date. It is unfortunate that the two have not faced off in the playoffs since 2021.
They won’t be meeting this year either, as the Washington Wizards finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Knicks are strong contenders in a wide-open Eastern Conference. The Knicks will be facing the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs this year.
Fans react to Trae Young’s response to Zohran Mamdani’s jab
There is no love lost between Trae Young and the city of New York, whether it is the fans or even the mayor. The fans never miss a chance to boo the 27-year-old with every chance they get. Unfortunately, they won’t have the opportunity to do so when the playoffs get underway, as Young was traded to the Wizards at the trade deadline this year.
Following Young’s warning to Mamdani on X, fans were quick to comment and react to his response on the social media platform.

The history between the two is exactly what Young’s tweet will bite Knicks fans. It also shows that the four-time All-Star continues to embrace his villain role in New York.
Trae Young will be looking to bounce back strongly next season
It has been a difficult 2025-26 campaign for Trae Young. Young was the face of the Hawks ever since he joined them in 2018. He took them to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021 before losing to the eventual champions, the Milwaukee Bucks. However, things have taken a downturn since.

Ever since the Hawks did not offer Young a super-max contract in the offseason, the relationship between the two has broken down. The team finished sixth in the Eastern Conference standings this season despite Young making only 10 appearances. Hence, the club decided to move on from Young and traded him at the deadline.
After moving to the Wizards at the trade deadline, he has made just five appearances for his new club. Alongside Young, the club traded for Anthony Davis as well. With a young core, the two stars will be looking to make some noise in the East next season if they stay fit and healthy.
