Both Mirra Andreeva and Marta Kostyuk started their campaigns for the 2026 season in the ongoing Brisbane International. One incident during the match at Pat Rafter Arena had everyone in stitches, including the two players.

Match continued after this light-hearted moment and saw the Ukrainian secure a 7-6(7), 6-3 win over the teenager and take a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head matchups. The 18-year-old started her campaign against Olivia Gadecki, following which, she went past Linda Noskova.

Kostyuk first went past Yulia Putintseva, then upset two-time Grand Slam finalist Amanda Anisimova, before scheduling the match against Andreeva.

Andreeva had a breakthrough season last year as she lifted her career’s first Big Title at the Dubai Open by defeating Clara Tauson. Later, she doubled her WTA 1000 titles tally by going past Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final.

These wins helped the World No.9 reach a career-high No.5 in the rankings table. Despite the two WTA 1000 titles, Andreeva failed to book a spot in the WTA Finals.

Marta Kostyuk explains why she played aggressive tennis against Mirra Andreeva

Marta Kostyuk registered her second consecutive top 10 win after knocking out Mirra Andreeva. She also reached a singles semifinal for the first time in 21 months. Following her win, Kostyuk was asked during the on-court interview about why she chose to play aggressively against Andreeva.

Well, you know, I feel like… I spoke to my team about it that whenever you play very, very hard hitters like Aryna [Sabalenka], Elena [Rybakina], and then like Amanda [Anisimova], you know, whoever you play next… the ball seems really, really slow and I mean, Mirra has a very, very deep balls and she changes pace so, it was really more physical today for sure.

Kostyuk secured two straight top 10 wins for the first time since the 2024 Stuttgart Open final. The 23-year-old has lifted just one singles title so far in her career- the 2023 ATX Open by defeating Varvara Gracheva. Since then, she has made two finals, the 2024 San Diego Open and the Stuttgart Open, losing both to Katie Boulter and Rybakina, respectively.

Yeah, it wasn’t easy conditions, I would say because it’s humid here but I don’t know, she had good serve and she also change pace a lot and, yeah, it was tough, I mean, I only watched her play, and when you don’t practice with someone ever, ever play against them, it’s very difficult. You go into the match having tactics but do not know what is coming from other side. So you know, I felt like that, just have to start really aggressive, really energetic, and find a way because we had to find a way every day, so I had to do too.

Kostyuk will next be locking horns with Jessica Pegula, who came from 3-0 sets down and 2-0 sets down in the first and second sets, respectively, against Liudmila Samsonova in the quarterfinals. Kostyuk trails 1-4 in the head-to-head matchups against the 2024 US Open finalist, with the lone win coming in the semifinals of the 2024 San Diego Open. They met twice last year, in Miami and Beijing.

Pegula is chasing her career’s 10th singles title. Last year, the World No.6 reached six finals, winning three titles at the ATX Open, Charleston Open, and the Bad Homburg Open.
