“Training for Draymond Green” – Rudy Gobert sparring UFC star Ciryl Gane before NBA season kicks off has fans in splits
Rudy Gobert causes a frenzy on social media with a viral video of him sparring with UFC’s former heavyweight Ciryl Gane
Rudy Gobert and Draymond Green were involved in altercation last season
The NBA offseason has seen players engaged in various activities, some for fun, others to stay fit for the upcoming season. Rudy Gobert, however, took a unique approach, gaining attention in a viral video posted by the MMA Factory in Paris, where he was seen sparring with former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane.
Furthermore, this isn’t the first time Rudy Gobert has made headlines for some sort of physical confrontation. Last season, he found himself at the center of controversy after a violent altercation with Golden State Warriors’ veteran forward, Draymond Green. The incident resulted in Green’s suspension by the league and created tension between him and his teammates.
Gobert had come under fire for his poor performance especially in the closing stages of the season as the Minnesota Timberwolves lost to the Dallas Mavericks at the Western Conference finals. His poor performance was also translated at the Olympics as he was eventually benched by the French national team.
Notwithstanding, he can claim to be a proud four-time Defensive Player of the Year, a record he shares with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace. However, many including Shaquille O’Neal believe that he isn’t deserving of the accolade. Last season he averaged 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game for the T-Wolves.
Fans react to viral video of Rudy Gobert sparring with UFC Ciryl Gane
Truly the internet can never be defeated. Fans once again reacted to seeing Rudy Gobert spend his off-season in an unconventional and fiery way. Unlike how other stars have been shown, maybe expect Jaylen Brown who has been engaged in the most intense form of training.
Furthermore, the popular parody account on X, NBA Centel, went as far as suggesting, jokingly, that he might have been sparring in an effort to get revenge on nemesis Draymond Green. A sentiment which was echoed by fans on the social media platform.
NBA Centel wrote on X
“Rudy Gobert training for Draymond Green.”
A couple of other social media reactions:
However, Gobert in the past said that he originally loved boxing before basketball. Later, he took training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under French black belt Samuel Monin. He would start the new season feeling revived and buzzing as the T-Wolves take on the Los Angeles Lakers on opening day on home court.
