The third Test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25 at the Gabba ended in a draw on the fifth day. The match was affected by rain and bad light on all days of the Test match.

Australia tried to get a win by batting explosively in the second innings on Day 5, but bad light and India’s resistance meant that they could not go 2-1 up in the series. Travis Head has been the best batter of the side in the series, but some injury concerns are present going into the Boxing Day Test at the MCG.

Former Australia fast bowler, Brett Lee feels that Head might have been struggling with a groin injury during the second innings of the Test match. He smashed 152 runs off 160 balls in the first innings of the Test match but struggled on his way to 17 runs off 19 balls in the second innings. He was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj on Day 5.

There may some worrying signs for Travis Head. Just there (while batting), he couldn’t move. We’re hearing a potential groin (injury). We don’t know how bad it is … definitely wasn’t moving as freely as he does normally.

Head has been the headache for Rohit Sharma and his Indian team in the last two years. He smashed a century in the WTC 2023 final and the ODI World Cup 2023 final and took the game away from India. Head also scored a century in the second Test in Adelaide, which resulted in Australia beating India and levelling the series. Even in the third Test, his innings took Australia to a dominant position.

Travis Head on his injury and his possibility of playing the Boxing Day Test

The series is tied at 1-1, and the next Test will start at the MCG on December 26. If Head is ruled out of the game, then it will be a big dent in Australia’s chances, and India will get an edge going into the Test match. Head, however, dismissed the injury concerns, stating that the groin is just sore and he will be ready for the Boxing Day Test match.

Feel like I’ve done that well in this series so far, very happy with the tempo I’m batting with. Pretty relaxed communication, feel like he (Smith) was in great rhythm, gives me great confidence when batting with him, was a nice partnership, really enjoyed it. When I first get out there, I try and navigate different challenges, solve different problems. Just a little sore but I should be fine (before the next game).

Josh Hazlewood is also set to miss the remaining two Test matches due to a calf strain. He suffered the injury during the warm-up ahead of Day 4 of the Test match. Scott Boland is expected to replace Hazlewood in the Boxing Day Test. He was also part of the pink ball Test when Hazlewood was left out due to injury.
