Just a few more days and Travis Hunter’s wait would be over for the prominent Heisman Trophy. If there’s anyone whom the two-way superstar credits for his success is his head coach Deion Sanders, as he shared an emotional message for him.

Hunter, who’s projected to be among the top five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, is counted among the top wide receivers across the country and one of the best cornerbacks in the sport. But if it wasn’t for Sanders– who developed Hunter into the two-way superstar he is today, he might have simply stayed in Jackson State.

During the latest edition of The Pivot Podcast, the Colorado star wide receiver opened up about how Coach Prime recruited him from Jackson State after he jumped to the FBS. As the Colorado prepared for the Alamo Bowl against BYU, Hunter gave a message to his head coach Sanders.

I don’t know where I would be. I try not to think too much on it because it’s our last…we have one more game and it’s going to be our last together. It gets you kind of emotional because it changed my life forever. I texted him after one game a couple games ago and said, ‘Coach, you changed my life forever.’

This season, Hunter posted 1,152 yards with 92 catches and 14 touchdowns along with 21 total tackles on defense with four recorded interceptions; that earned him the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year honor.

Travis Hunter confident about winning Heisman Trophy amid tough competition

Although the Colorado star wideout is the favorite for the Heisman Trophy, the competition is tough against Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty. But when asked about him, he is certainly confident about his chances of winning the prestigious award before debuting in the league.

You’ve never seen a player like me before… The first thing I told my trainer was, ‘I wanna be the best player you ever trained.

Travis Hunter stated

While Hunter enjoyed playing on both sides of the fall in collegiate football, he might have to make a pick between the offense or defense when he enters the league in 2025. However, the wideout has been insistent on wanting to play both sides which is unprecedented in the NFL, though it wouldn’t be quite feasible for him to maintain his versatility because of the intense demands of the league.
