The much-awaited Heisman trophy ceremony took place on Saturday night, declaring Colorado star Travis Hunter as the winner. With several cheers for the two-way athlete, including some from legendary rapper Lil Wayne, Hunter had quite an acceptance speech. The 21-year-old stood with gratitude and innocence as he made a hilarious admission to the rapper on stage.

The star-studded ceremony showcased rapper Lil Wayne, Deion Sanders, and Shedeur Sanders sitting beside each other as Travis Hunter took the stage. The victorious athlete hit all the right notes as he expressed gratitude to Lil Wayne for his support. Amongst other things, Hunter hilariously admitted the way he came across his music.

Interestingly, the Colorado star was not a lifelong fan, having acquainted with his music via his fiancée. He followed it by quoting Wayne’s 2011 hit, “6 Foot 7 Foot” which cracked the audience.

My fiancée love you. I didn’t know none of your songs until she let me know because I don’t listen to music. She let me know. She told me, like, ‘You gotta listen to this. If you don’t listen to music, listen to Wayne.’ And from that day on, that’s all I listened to.

Travis Hunter confessed

Travis Hunter said that he hadn’t known who Wayne was since he did not listen to music. However, he swore that Wayne was all he listened to for his pre-game music. The speech segment was as amusing as it was emotional for everybody involved. With this award, Hunter became the second Colorado player to win the trophy after running back Rashaan Salaam in 1994. 

The recent times have been nothing but praiseworthy for Travis Hunter. He became the first player in his history to be a finalist for both the Biletnikoff Award and the Bednarik Award. That is, even before he entered the NFL. However, his record guaranteed enough for his presence in the league after the 2025 Draft.

Travis Hunter had quite an interesting evening with his extended collection of trophies getting some company. After his acceptance speech, though, many credit their successful evening to him. Post Hunter’s unexpected admission to Lil Wayne, the two gathered on stage to pose for the iconic moment.

Having started his speech with disbelief, Hunter took everybody present through an emotional rollercoaster. Lil Wayne’s presence itself was an unexpected occurrence for everybody present. Besides the rapper, Hunter thanked his fiancée, and his family, and Coach Deion Sanders for their consistent support.

Other finalists, Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, and Miami’s Cam Ward were also present at the ceremony. Hunter has had quite a season with the Buffaloes. As a wide receiver, he racked up 1,152 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns, while on defense, Hunter contributed 32 tackles, one tackle for loss, and four interceptions.
