When the Jacksonville Jaguars picked Travis Hunter with the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the idea was that he would be the generational talent that their team lacked for a long time. Their selection also gave a nod to the Colorado Buffaloes star that he could play both ways.

Until the draft, most of the discussions surrounding Hunter were whether teams would allow him to play both cornerback and wide receiver. Some believed it was fine for him to do it in college, but in the NFL, it becomes a lot harder, especially when going up against grown men.

The Jaguars’ selection of him had fans believing the 22-year-old was going to bring back his former head coach, Deion Sanders‘ dual-threat extravaganza from his time. However, clips emanating from the Jaguars’ voluntary OTAs hinted that Hunter was just participating in receiver drills.

Most of the discourse was about his seemingly casual approach to his drills. The Buffaloes’ star was always captured dancing away before the snap, while his receiver teammate, Brian Thomas Jr., had a more serious approach.

Earlier today, the Jaguars released another clip of Travis Hunter, but this time, he was wearing defensive colors. The clip shows the 6′ 1″ star trailing fellow rookie Darius Lassiter, then, perhaps knowing when the ball was about to reach, turned back to first tip the ball with his right hand.

Then, as the ball was coming down, he leaped forward to control it with both his hands and ended up with the interception. The Jaguars were notably in awe of this play and christened their recently married first-round pick as a ‘Unicorn’.

Travis Hunter’s first cornerback play for Jaguars has fans stunned

Football fans who have watched Travis Hunter develop over the years, both at Jackson State University and the University of Colorado, have seen these plays before. Admittedly, those were against college opponents, most of whom are not good enough to play in the NFL.

Even though this was against an undrafted rookie who, at most, will make it to the practice squad initially, fans were in awe that Hunter was getting the hang of it in the NFL. Most of those stunned fans could not believe how he single-handedly upset the entire play. They took to social media to talk about this, examples of which are below.

Not all fans were praising Travis Hunter on this play, as they noticed that the ball did touch the ground before he scooped it up. However, if the young star can even start knocking the ball out of a receiver’s reach consistently, it would be good enough for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who last season ranked last in passing yards allowed.

Travis Hunter last remaining unsigned Top 10 draft pick

Hunter is doing everything that the Jacksonville Jaguars are asking him to do. Be it to liven up practices, or help fans have a day, or hype his teammates up with plays such as this interception, the 22-year-old has been doing it all.

However, as per Ian Rapoport, he is allegedly doing all of this for free. The Florida-born star is yet to sign his rookie contract. After Patriots No. 4 pick Will Campbell signed his contract earlier today, that leaves Hunter as the sole Top 10 pick from the 2025 draft unsigned.

It might not be long before that happens, considering his agent might still be trying to place a value on his client’s abilities, both as a dual-threat superstar as well as someone who will likely bring a lot of marketing value to the team. Hunter could end up breaking the bank as a rookie.
