As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for their biggest game of the season, a different kind of headline is stealing the spotlight. It has nothing to do with touchdowns or game-winning drives, but instead, with love, legacy, and a future that may lie beyond the gridiron.

On Saturday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport sent shockwaves through the Chiefs Kingdom with a report that could mark the end of an era: Super Bowl LIX may be the final time Travis Kelce takes the field as an NFL player.

Rapoport reported that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce remains undecided about continuing his NFL career into a 13th season.

A win would make the Chiefs the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, allowing Kelce to walk off into the sunset in a way almost no one gets to do. A loss could fuel him to return for the 2025 season, but it also could show him it’s time.

However, Travis Kelce had recently dismissed the idea that the 2024 season would be his last. Earlier this week in the lead-up to the Super Bowl that while he has “thought about” retirement, he still believes he can continue playing, according to Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

I think I still got a lot of football left in me. I know I’ve been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That’s always been the goal, knowing that football only lasts for so long. You’ve got to find a way to get into another career, another profession. I’ve been doing that in my offseasons. But for the most part, I’m planning on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football.

Travis Kelce told Patra

The whole situation is like being in an episode of The Traitors, one just doesn’t know what the endgame of anyone. The ambiguous “for the most part” has surely raised some eyebrows. The wait isn’t too far, Kansas City wins or loses.

Kelce remains under contract through 2025 with a base salary of $4.5 million, according to Spotrac. However, with the Chiefs set to pay him an $11.5 million roster bonus if he remains on the team past March 14, a decision on his future could arrive within the next five weeks.
