Shedeur Sanders‘ journey to be selected as the Cleveland Browns member was filled with thorns at every turn in the three days of the 2025 NFL Draft. Once touted to be the first overall pick, Sanders slid down to the fifth round.

Reports and speculations started to flock in like ants to sugar. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero broke the news that NFL GMs weren’t too happy with the former Colorado quarterback the way he conducted himself during the NFL Combine.

Throughout the pre-draft process, Shedeur Sanders very much proceeded as if he was dictating to clubs where he was going to go rather than how the draft works.

an NFL scout told Pelissero

An anonymous coach didn’t even view Sanders as a first-round draft pick.

He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks, never plays on time, has horrible body language, and blames teammates. But the biggest thing is, he’s not that goo.

the anonymous coach told Pelissero

The negativity definitely impacted his draft stock. No one expected the 2024 FBS leader in pass completion would remain undrafted until the 144th pick.

Three-time Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce thought the anonymous report was ‘lame.’

I think whoever’s the f**** anonymous person that’s saying this should… Come out and say who they were. Like, what the s*** is that about? Like, if you’re gonna leak that f**** sh** [then] f**** be the one that says, ‘Yeah, it just didn’t go well for us.’ Don’t f**** say that we’re anonymous, you know?

Kelce’s older brother and retired NFL center, Jason Kelce, also questioned the NFL team’s motives to draft Sanders so far down in the draft. Kelce brought up former Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick as an example.

You mean to tell me if Michael Vick had these same exact off-the-field things happening or if [Shedeur Sanders] had Michael Vick’s exact talent, he wouldn’t have been taken in the first round? Of course he would have.

Jason Kelce argued

Jason also highlighted that NFL teams tend to make mistakes during the draft. Sanders going in the fifth round is a big one.

Of course, the draft was a disappointing affair for Sanders and his Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders, but the positive part is that he has his foot in the door. The next step is to prove that the Browns didn’t make a mistake by selecting him.

He has tough competition ahead of him. The 23-year-old must outperform fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel and gain access to the 53-man roster in August. Kelce, a Cleveland native, was jubilant to see the Browns selecting him. He believes that Sanders has the talent to be a hit with the Browns.

I love this for Cleveland [man], I really do. The Browns fan deep down in my heart is like, ‘F*** yeah.’ You get a swag champ that works his a** off that has something to prove now.

The Browns will likely start 40-year-old Joe Flacco in week one. ESPN’s Damien Woody believes that the Browns will test Gabriel and Sanders. Kenny Pickett, whom they brought in during the offseason, will be traded.

We know what Joe Flacco is. We know what Kenny Pickett is… I think for the Cleveland Browns, the priority should be trying to find out if one of these two rookie quarterbacks could be your long-term solution.

Sanders’ final season with the Colorado Buffaloes was exceptional. He threw 353 completions from 477 attempts for 4134 yards, 41 overall touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. The Buffs played in their first bowl game since 2016, which they eventually lost to BYU.
