The NFL has seen many successful great head coaches and players pairing, typically with quarterbacks, but the bond between Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s relationship and tight end Travis Kelce stands out as one of the most respected and admired in league history, a sentiment clearly reflected in Kelce’s words.
Just days after giving tribute to Reid by wearing the Super Bowl XXXI cap that changed Reid’s professional life, the future Hall of Fame tight end reflected on his journey in the league. The duo’s journey in Kansas City began together in 2013 and Kelce gives all the credit for his earned prominence in the league to Reid.
After Kelce was drafted by the Chiefs, just two months after the franchise hired Reid from the Philadelphia Eagles, he received the first call from his brother, Jason Kelce. Since the legendary center had already played under Reid as head coach, he shared his experience and the standard of expectations that Travis should keep from Reid. Looking back at the time, Reid has exceeded all those expectations.

Since the ten-time Pro Bowler spent his entire NFL career being loyal to the Chiefs, Reid literally watched him grow up from a young 23-year-old, who wanted to go Cincinnati, to solidifying his Hall of Fame status, and that’s why Travis considers him a father figure in his life.
Travis Kelce reflects on sideline outburst towards Andy Reid in Super Bowl LVIII
The only time Travis’ respect towards his head coach was scrutinized was Super Bowl LVIII when he was seen in an aggressive outburst towards Reid. The tight end was spotted angrily screaming at the three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach on the sidelines, which stretched into a big controversy after the game.
“A push is a bit of an exaggeration. I would never push my coach like that. I was fired up, though, and Coach Reid knows I get fired up, and sometimes he gets fired up the same way to get me going,” said Travis Kelce, looking back at that incident via Michael Silver of The Athletic.
He clarified that he was simply asking Reid to get back on the field to take down the San Francisco 49ers but he came out pretty aggressively in the moment, which even he accepts shouldn’t have happened.
