Travis Kelce missed the chance to become the only tight end with a three-peat to his name after the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in last season’s Super Bowl. Kelce contemplated retirement but eventually decided that he wanted to finish his career with a fourth ring.
Unfortunately, the 2025 season hasn’t panned out as he would have liked. Nevertheless, the 36-year-old tight end went level with Hall of Famer Jerry Rice by racking up 800 yards for 12 consecutive seasons.
Kelce needed just three yards to cross 800 receiving yards for the season. Midway through the second quarter, Chris Oladokun connected with Kelce for a six-yard gain to set the record. The drive wrapped up with Harrison Butker nailing a 54-yard field goal.
Kelce could have had more. The Chiefs’ quarterbacks targeted the big tight end four times in the game. However, his day finished with that lone catch. The Chiefs lost the game 9-26. It was Kelce’s seventh loss against the Titans. The only time he tasted victory against them was back in August 2022. He had 10 catches for 106 yards that day.

The pass to Kelce was Oladokun’s first completion in the NFL. Despite the disappointing result, Oladokun was excited to at last get the chance to play a game.
If you had told me my first NFL completion was going to be to Travis Kelce, I probably would’ve laughed at you.

A moment of disbelief for No. 19? Chris Oladokun's first NFL regular-season completion was to Chiefs TE Travis Kelce: "If you had told me my first NFL completion was going to be to Travis Kelce, I probably would've laughed at you."

Oladokun played because Gardner Minshew hurt his knee and may have suffered an ACL tear. For the second week in a row, a Chiefs quarterback encountered the same fate. Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in the Week 15 loss to the Chargers.
Ahead of facing the Titans, Kelce claimed that Mahomes will come back stronger in 2026.
He’s a fearless, fearless warrior when it comes to this football thing….He’s gonna make sure he comes back stronger than ever….hopefully the Chiefs can get him back as soon as possible.
Travis Kelce said on his podcast
Mahomes’ season ended with 3587 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions in 14 games.

There are still two more games left before the regular season ends. It’s unclear how many the Chiefs will win with the quarterback position in shambles. They could follow the Colts’ route and bring back a veteran out of retirement.

One former Chiefs player has already offered his services. Seeing the debacle against the Titans, former Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel tweeted,
Seeing a lot of people mentioning me going to the Chiefs. Arm’s loose. Phone line’s open.

Cassel played four seasons with the Chiefs. One of his two winning seasons was in 2010 as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, when he posted a 10-5 record. He had 262 completions for 3116 yards, 27 touchdowns, and 7 picks.
Kelce and Cassel never played together. The Chiefs cut Cassel a month before Kelce was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. Perhaps the Chiefs can make it happen this time.
One thing is certain: the Chiefs have missed Mahomes and will continue to until he completes his rehab. Former Chiefs offensive lineman Mitchell Schwartz tweeted,
We restarting the MVPat 2025 campaign after that embarrassment? I have a lot of bad things to say, but maybe the best way to say it is how can you not come away from that game realizing just how F’ing much that guy has done for this franchise this year (or these last few years).
Next week, the Chiefs take on the Denver Broncos before closing out the year with a trip to Vegas to play the Raiders.
