The Kansas City Chiefs’ week 9 fixture against the Buffalo Bills promised to be a blockbuster. In recent years, these two NFL franchises have provided several memorable moments. Travis Kelce, a veteran of the showdown, walked into Highmark Stadium in Buffalo in search of the Chiefs’ first win in five games.

Historically, Kelce has thrived in big games such as this, and fans expected another massive performance from the All-Pro tight end. At the end of last year’s 30-21 defeat, Kelce was caught mocking the Bills Mafia, and in a similar fashion, the 36-year-old took a swipe at the fans in blue on Sunday (November 2).

Right before the end of the first half, Kelce picked up an injury and left the field to receive treatment. While heading his way back to the Chiefs’ dugout, Kelce soaked in all the jeers trickling down from the bleachers. CBS Sports announcer Jim Nantz can be heard saying, “I love it,” on the microphone.

Bills defender could be punished for hit on Travis Kelce

Kelce was lucky enough to be walking on his feet after getting crunched by a Bills defender before leaving the field. He may be a senior citizen in terms of football years, but the Cleveland Heights native is one tough dude.

Here’s what happened. With nine seconds remaining in the first half and the Chiefs facing 3rd-and-goal, Patrick Mahomes aimed at Kelce running a post route inside the goal. Bills safety Cole Bishop rammed Kelce, the three-time Super Bowl winner, milliseconds after the ball zoomed past his left palm.

The force of the tackle splattered Kelce onto the turf. Fortunately for the Chiefs faithful, he was able to walk it off. Coach Andy Reid decided to settle for a field goal.

Bishop did not receive any punishment during the game even though the replay showed that Kelce was a defenseless player. Of course, the league will review the incident at a later date, and if found guilty, then Bishop could be slapped with a fine of up to $23,186.

If Kelce had caught the ball, then he would have surpassed legendary Priest Holmes as the Chiefs’ all time leading touchdown maker. Currently, Kelce is level with Holmes on 82 regular season TDs.

Kelce returned in the second half and played through the pain. His best moment came after running back Kareem Hunt helped to reduce the deficit to nine points at the start of the fourth quarter. Reid instructed quarterback Mahomes to go for two points, and he split two Bills defenders to find Kelce inside the end zone.

Kelce averaged 16.5 yards per catch, the same as in last week’s win over the Washington Commanders. However, his overall numbers dropped to 4 catches for 66 yards as compared to 6 for 99 and 1 score in Week 8. After nine games, Kelce has accumulated 41 receptions from 53 targets for 540 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The game ended in a 21-28 defeat for the Chiefs, leaving them with a 5-4 record and third in the AFC West. KC enter their bye week and the week after the bye face off against the Denver Broncos.
