As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for their fifth Super Bowl game in the last six years, Travis Kelce is making headlines for sporting a vintage Super Bowl XXXI hat. While many initially wondered about the significance of the hat– which is unrelated to the Chiefs– its connection to head coach Andy Reid soon became clear.
The iconic hat, which harks back to the 1997 championship game between the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots, symbolizes the great respect Kelce has for his coach Reid. The three-time Super Bowl-winning head coach reportedly was the quarterbacks coach for the Packers, who destroyed the Patriots at 35-21 in 1997.
Ried’s legacy in the NFL isn’t primarily limited to Kansas City, in fact, he is the only head coach to lead two different franchises to Super Bowl appearances. But before his success in the Philadelphia Eagles and Packers, his coaching career began in Green Bay. He joined the Packers in 1992 as an assistant offensive line and tight ends coach and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 1997, where he worked closely with Hall of Famer Brett Favre.

After winning the Super Bowl XXXI, he was offered the head coach position in Philadelphia in 1999 before taking over Kansas City in 2013. The future Hall of Fame tight end’s choice of hat was not just a fashion statement, but a tribute to a pivotal moment in Reid’s coaching career. This vintage hat combined with Kelce’s standout performances, has fans buzzing with excitement as they anticipate another thrilling chapter in the Chiefs’ history.
Andy Reid endorses Travis Kelce for coaching career post-retirement
Kelce debuted in the NFL in the same year Reid joined the Chiefs as head coach in 2013. Over the years, they have formed a remarkable relationship that has significantly shaped the franchise’s success. Now as the ten-time Pro Bowler moves closer to his retirement, Reid is highly recommending him to pursue coaching after hanging his cleats, believing he would be a great coach.
Kelce has spent his entire NFL career being loyal to Kansas City and demonstrated true leadership in the locker room. Such qualities in him are what led the legendary head coach to believe that Kelce would gain even greater prominence as a coach if he chose to pursue that path.
