Tre’Davious White must have thought that he gave the Buffalo Bills another chance to win the game when he tackled the Denver Broncos wideout Marvin Mims inside the 10-yard line. The referee didn’t share his sentiments.
A penalty flag stared down White as he made his way up from the turf of Empower Field in Denver. It took the Bills’ cornerback a short while to get a handle on the situation. All hell broke loose when he realized the referee had called a defensive pass interference penalty.
The 31-year-old argued with a motionless official before smashing his helmet on the ground. It brought a reaction from the official, but the outcome did little to calm White’s temper. The official threw a second flag for an unsportsmanlike penalty.
Denver used a timeout to send in the field goal team. Wil Lutz smashed the game-winning field goal, and the Broncos won 33-30.
I didn’t interfere with the guy when the ball got there. I knocked the ball down… Fell on top of him. I just think that the crowd played a big part also. Referees are human, man!!! People make mistakes! I just think it should be up to the players to decide the game. When the game is fought so hard, went to the wire, plays like that… As a defensive back, that’s what you want, get the guy to the ground… Referees just don’t know ball man.

Coincidentally, that wasn’t the only PI of the drive. Two plays earlier, the officials penalized Taron Johnson for holding onto Broncos wideout Courtland Sutton.

That’s just bad officiating.
Game day referee explains the reason behind controversial PI call on Tre’Davious White
People tend to take notice when referees make controversial calls that decide the outcome of a game of such magnitude. After the game, gameday referee Carl Cheffers explained to the media the reason behind calling PI on White’s tackle.

Cheffers claimed that White made early contact with Mims that stopped the Denver player from holding onto the pass.
The second one was early contact and arm grab that materially restricted the receiver.
Carl Cheffers said via Matthew Bove of WKBW
White ended his night with 4 combined tackles. In 2025, White had 29 tackles, 10 pass deflections, 6 tackles for loss and one interception. After being drafted 27th overall in 2017, White has made a total of 109 appearances in his career for the Bills and Rams, racking up 373 combined tackles, 83 pass deflections, 19 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and one forced return.
Referee shares his honest opinion on a few more controversial calls
When asked about the Johnson penalty, Cheffers noted that the Bills DB held onto Sutton’s right arm. It restricted the Broncos wideout from jumping in the air to make the catch.
That being said, the biggest talking point from the game was Josh Allen’s interception. Denver’s Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted Allen’s pass by snatching the ball away from Bills receiver Brandin Cooks. Here’s what Cheffers saw (H/T: Sports Illustrated):
The receiver has to complete the process of a catch. He was going to the ground as part of the process of the catch and he lost possession of the ball when he hit the ground. The defender gained possession of it at that point. The defender was the one who completed the process of the catch, so the defender was awarded the ball.

Allen took the blame on himself for the loss. Despite throwing three touchdown passes, Allen turned the ball over four times. Meanwhile, the Broncos move ahead to the AFC title game for the first time since 2015 season. However, they will be without Nix as he suffered a fractured ankle on the second last play. According to reports, veteran Jarrett Stidham is the frontrunner to start for Denver.
