Trent Alexander-Arnold bizarrely dropped from England squad for the World Cup qualifiers by Gareth Southgate

The international break for the World Cup qualifiers are set to begin soon and squads were named for the same. There were some surprise inclusions with Ollie Watkins and Sam Johnstone getting called up alongside Jesse Lingard. There were also some surprising exclusions with Patrick Bamford and Trent Alexander-Arnold not being called up.

Trent Alexander-Arnold just cannot seem to catch a break

Trent Alexander-Arnold has sacrificed his offensive input this season due to Liverpool’s unstable back-line and that has now cost him a place in the England squad. Trent can not win whatever he does it would seem.

One of Liverpool’s bright spots in a dark season, Trent has been performing better and better throughout the season. There was a minor dip in form where he wasn’t as influential as he was before, but he has now rectified that. He was criticized to be a defensive liability as he focused more only on providing crosses for the forwards. He has worked on it this season and has become defensively reliable in a Liverpool backline that was being changed every week.

Nothing he has done is being taken into consideration as players like Reece James, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker are being selected. England manager Gareth Southgate based his selection on ‘current form’ and that is a sign of disrespect to Trent. James is benched by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel every week for Cesar Azpilicueta and Callum Hudson Odoi. Trippier had been handed a 3 month suspension due to booking allegations. Kyle Walker is simply unreliable and is not at Trent’s level.

The level of disrespect shown to Trent by Gareth Southgate is genuinely baffling and only makes the latter be seen as a misfit for the role of England manager.
