With the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) now suspended, the focus of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shifted to getting all players back home safely. A major chunk of the work is already done as a majority of the overseas stars as well as Indians have reached home safe and sound. Only the Australians and certain others who had to isolate have travelled to the Maldives.
The IPL had to be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic breaching the teams’ bio-bubbles. More than 5 positive cases among personnel inside the bubble were reported and the BCCI had no choice but to indefinitely suspend the event. There is now no resumption in sight and hence, all focus will shift to the upcoming Test matches starting with New Zealand’s series against England and then the World Test Championship (WTC) final and India’s series against England.
The focus for the New Zealanders has just shifted to the Test format now and the Test contingent is currently in the Maldives before they travel to the UK. Those who aren’t a part of the Tests have left in two batches and reached home. Among those is one Test players however, in Trent Boult who asked for special permission to spend time with his family before travelling later to the UK for the Tests.
‘My heart goes out to the people of India’ – Trent Boult

Trent Boult reached home yesterday with the first batch of New Zealand players consisting of his Mumbai Indians (MI) teammates and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) New Zealanders. Upon arrival, the left-arm pacer penned a heartfelt message to the people of India.
Taking to Instagram, he wrote, “My heart goes out to the people of the India, while I am sad to be leaving the @mumbaiindians family and see the IPL come to an end, none of that compares to the suffering many people are going through right now.”
“India is a place that has given me so much as a cricketer and person. I have always deeply appreciated the support that I’ve received from my Indian fans. This is a tragic time and I hope things can improve soon. I look forward to returning to this beautiful country when I can,” he added.
Thanking his franchise yet again, Boult said, “Thank you again to the @mumbaiindians for getting us all home and going above and beyond to ensure health and safety was the priority for all of the players and families.”
Trent Boult will now miss New Zealand’s first Test against England which begins in early June, but should arrive in time to play the second Test and the all-important WTC final.
