Trent Grisham is returning for a third season in the Bronx. On Tuesday, the outfielder accepted the 1-year, $22.05 million qualifying offer from the team. This move from him caused a massive outrage among Yankees fans on social media.

Grisham was one of the 4 MLB players, along with Chicago Cubs’ Shota Imanaga, Detroit Tigers’ Gleyber Torres and Milwaukee Brewers’ Brandon Woodruff, who accepted the qualifying offer. A total of 9 players would decline this offer and elect free agency.

The 29-year-old joined the Yankees in December 2023 as part of the 7-player blockbuster trade deal between the Yanks and the San Diego Padres, which also included Juan Soto. While Soto became a free agent after the 2024 season and then signed with the New York Mets on a record-breaking deal, Grisham remained with the Yankees.

The 2025 season turned out to be a breakthrough season for him. With a .235/.348/.464 slash line in 143 games, he set personal best records in several categories. He ended the campaign with 34 home runs and 74 RBIs.

The Yankees were looking to bounce back this year after stumbling in the World Series in 2024. Following a slight slump in the middle of the season, the Yankees finished the year with a 94-68 record. However, with the Toronto Blue Jays owning the tiebreaker over them, they missed out on the AL East title.

After overcoming their archrivals, the Boston Red Sox, in the AL Wild Card Series round, the Yankees faced the Blue Jays in the American League Division Series (ALDS). The Canadian side once again dominated them and eliminated them by winning the best-of-five series 3-1.

Grisham was unable to produce the same kind of offensive performances in the postseason. He went 4-for-29 with a .138 average and had just 4 RBIs with zero home runs.

The 2-time Gold Glove winner was expected by many to reject this offer. However, that did not turn out to be the case and he will now be back with the team next year.

Grisham acceptance of the offer caused some outrage among the Yankees fans on social media. Many of them were not pleased with this. One user on X wrote, “Not excited at all” and took a swipe at Grisham.

Check out that and some other fan reactions regarding this development below:

His return solves some of the Yankees’ outfield problems. With 3-time MLB MVP Aaron Judge playing in right field, Grisham would be taking one of the two remaining outfield positions. Recently, General Manager Brian Cashman spoke regarding Cody Bellinger and expressed that Grisham’s return will not impact their pursuit of the 2-time All-Star who has become a free agent after opting out of his deal.

Last year was the first time that Grisham had hit more than 20 home runs in a season. He will need to have a similar performance in 2026 if he wants to bring the fans back on his side. A poor season could cause more outrage among them.
