Jerry Jones is a very generous man when it comes to treating his Dallas Cowboys. Occasionally, however, he plays hardball with some. For instance, Jones and the Cowboys’ management penalized star cornerback Trevon Diggs by docking $500,000 from his base salary.

On Thursday, Cowboys insider Clarence Hill Jr. reported that Diggs needed to take part in 84.375% of the offseason program in order to avoid a $500,000 de-escalator. However, he missed the OTAs and the minicamp.

Diggs was in extended rehab with a knee injury. He traveled to Miami to continue his rehab process instead of reporting to the Cowboys’ facility. As a result, he failed to attend the OTAs and the minicamp.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs losing money for not showing up was an automatic trigger in his Cowboys contract. He preferred to work out and rehab in Florida with his private trainer because he felt that was best for his career. There are no surprises here, nor should there be hard feelings.

Clarence Hill Jr. tweeted

Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2024. The contract included an average annual salary of $19.4 million, a base salary of $8.5 million for 2025, a cap hit of $12,088,237, and a dead cap value of $17,323,534.

Within a couple of hours, Diggs posted a couple of tweets. One contained a short promo for his next YouTube video about his injury and rehab.

And the second one had a short message addressed to his fans.

Who are the other weapons for the Cowboys, in case Trevon Diggs is not fit for the week one fixture?

Diggs’ recovery plans are on time, but the Cowboys are still in the dark on whether he will start in the backfield of the defense on day one against the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

For that reason, JJ and Stephen Jones targeted young cornerbacks in the draft. The Cowboys took East Carolina’s Shavon Revel in the third round. Revel is also recovering from a torn ACL of his own in his final year with the Pirates. The good news is that the 24-year-old will join the team for training camp.

Another player to keep an eye out for as a potential stopgap for Diggs is second-year DB Caelen Carson. Carson spent his rookie season on IR and underwent shoulder surgery earlier this year. He will attend the training camp.

A surplus of good DBs is a good problem to have. Jourdan Lewis was impeccable last season after DaRon Bland picked up an injury. However, Lewis left the Cowboys to sign for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Fortunately, Bland rejoined the roster near the tail end of last season and is likely to play in the slot.

The Cowboys need a big year from their new guy, Kaiir Elam. Jones picked him up from the Bills via a trade (a fifth-round pick in 2025 and a seventh-round pick in 2026) when the free agency opened. Despite lodging 26 tackles and 2 tackles for loss in the regular season, Elam was manhandled by the Kansas City Chiefs’ receivers in the AFC Championship game.

Even though the Cowboys, on paper, have good depth at cornerback, they would still prefer Trevon Diggs back on the starting roster because the Eagles will not show mercy.
