Trevor Lawrence‘s shoulder was in a sling after undergoing surgery for an AC joint sprain in his shoulder when the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to fire Doug Pederson. The Jaguars appointed Liam Coen, but Lawrence vividly remembers Pederson’s influence on his NFL career.
During a recent segment of Up & Adams with Kay Adams, Lawrence revealed that he was surprised at first but came to terms once he realized that the NFL is a results business and they haven’t been able to deliver positive results. The Jaguars finished with a 4-13 record, and Pederson was fired soon after, capping off a four-year stint in Florida.
Everybody has their part, and everyone has to take the accountability. But, yeah, I was. Surprise? I don’t know about surprise just because this is a results business, and it’s unfortunate how the season went and they decided to move on from coach.

Amidst the disappointment, Lawrence has something new to look forward to: a new head coach in 2025. Coen came from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was the offensive coordinator. Under his guidance, QB Baker Mayfield threw 470 passes for 4500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
Coen quickly went to work, and with the help of the owner, Shad Khan, they appointed Grant Udinski as the offensive coordinator, Anthony Campanile as the defensive coordinator, Heath Farwell as the special teams coordinator, Shane Waldron as the pass game coordinator, Spencer Whipple as the quarterbacks’ coach, and Shaun Sarrett as the offensive line coach.
Trevor Lawrence reveals the biggest difference between Doug Pederson and Liam Coen
When Adams asked Lawrence to talk about the biggest difference between Pederson and Coen’s coaching philosophy, the Pro Bowler said fans would witness a noticeable difference in the run game.

Just the run game. It’s just different, obviously; there’s going to be a lot of changes in verbiage and terminology, all those things, and the system is different. The run game and how it’s built off that, his knowledge of how to set up the run game with the play action, screens.

Lawrence hasn’t had the opportunity to talk about strategies and play calling with his new OC Grant Udinski yet, but from the brief exchange, he realized that the former Vikings OC is a smart person.
If anyone can improve the 26th-ranked (the second-worst team in the league in yards per rush before contact, 2.13 seconds, and second-best in yards after contact, 2.18 seconds) Jaguars run game then it’s Coen and Udinski.
