In early May, ESPN’s Adam Schefter heard the Jacksonville Jaguars had intentions of extending quarterback Trevor Lawrence’s contract. While Schefter did not name any number, he did predict that it would be around $50 million.

The Jags’ head coach, Doug Pederson, wanted to wrap up the deal very quickly. He addressed the Duval country about the same.

It's part of the business. The sooner you get it done, right, it's behind everybody, and now we focus on football, and so that's not lingering and that's not out there.
Doug Pederson said

Fans were unhappy back then and Thursday’s announcement did not change their stance. The Jaguars did the unthinkable by giving Lawrence a five year $275 million deal with $200 million guaranteed money.

Additionally, the Clemson graduate would earn $37.5 million as a signing bonus. His base salary will be $1.05 million and a roster bonus of $4.62 million while carrying a cap hit of $11,707,019 and a dead cap value of $6,029,725 per Spotrac.

Football fans on social media question the Jaguars’ decision to give Trevor Lawrence a massive contract

The deal essentially makes Lawrence the joint highest-paid quarterback with $55 million a year alongside the Cincinnati Bengals Joe Burrow. While Burrow has played in the Super Bowl and a Conference Championship game, Lawrence has yet to manage either.

Lawrence’s trajectory was on the up following a 9-8 season in 2022. He showed a similar winning mentality early on in 2023, but even after suffering an ankle injury he kept on playing games and paid the price. Despite ending the campaign with 9 wins, the Jags failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Although coach Pederson remains optimistic about Trevor Lawrence’s progress as a franchise quarterback, football fans do not believe the 24-year-old deserves a massive extension.

Pederson revealed that Lawrence has been a vocal presence in the Jaguars locker room in the OTAs. The fourth-year veteran has assumed the role of leader.

He's becoming the vocal leader in the locker room, on the field, in meetings… he's giving us suggestions and ideas and really becoming another coach, a set of eyes on the field.
Doug Pederson said per NBC Sports

If Lawrence wants to be a successful quarterback in the NFL, then he needs to cut down on losing the ball (60). There are only 11 quarterbacks since 1978 who turned the ball over more compared to him.

It's the biggest thing that he has to focus on moving forward. We just can't have this amount of turnovers.
Doug Pederson said during the Jaguars’ last press conference of the 2023 season

The Jags made sure that Lawrence had all the weapons he required to deliver the results. Running back Travis Etienne Jr., tight end Evan Engram, and receivers Christian Kirk, and Gabe Davis, should make life easier.
