Trevor Lawrence has not had the best of starts this NFL season. Trailing 0-2, the Jacksonville Jaguars desperately needed a win to get their season going.
On top of that, his massive contract also weighed upon him as he only had one touchdown to show for it in those two games. He managed to add one more against the Buffalo Bills tonight. But his interception to Damar Hamlin has many going berserk.
The play happened in the second quarter with the Jaguars needing a touchdown to get one foot back into the game. Snapping off their 41-yard line, Lawrence had to keep the drive going. His offensive line held up well enough to give him enough time to throw. But his pass to rookie WR Brian Thomas Jr. was way too high.
That high pass ended up in Damar Hamlin‘s hands to mark his first interception of his career. For Lawrence and the Jaguars, the disappointments continued.
Had Trevor Lawrence thrown that pass high to avoid tight coverage it could have been seen as an excuse. Those excuses could have some bonus points had there been a defensive lineman trying to block the throw. But his offensive line opened a hole before him to get a clear vision. On top of that, Thomas Jr. was wide open with no defenders within three yards of him.
Despite all that, for the former Clemson star to throw it that high was inexplicable. That interception handed the Buffalo Bills another chance at a touchdown, which they took without any hesitation. They then rubbed salt into their wounds by forcing a punt and scoring another touchdown before the end of the half.
Fans take shots at Trevor Lawrence and laud Damar Hamlin
Fans of the game watching this unfold had two thoughts in mind. On one hand, they were appreciative of Damar Hamlin logging his first interception after almost losing his life on the football field. This is only going to add to a future documentary and is a testament to the will of a human being.
On the other hand, Trevor Lawrence is making the Jaguars look foolish for handing him one of the highest yearly salaries in league history.
Armed with their emotions, fans took to social media to voice their opinions. They lauded Hamlin while taking shots at Lawrence for his disastrous throw. Check out some of those examples below;
The Jaguars might have missed the plot with these three losses. Their next eight games until the bye will see them facing teams raring to take advantage of these mistakes.
If Trevor Lawrence does not pull up his socks, the Jacksonville Jaguars might end up having to save face after a disappointing season.
