The Cincinnati Bengals went on the road to take on the Los Angeles Chargers knowing it will be a battle. Joe Burrow and his offense know facing a Jim Harbaugh defense is not an easy task. But it was his defensive teammate Trey Hendrickson that had a rough moment in his bid to stop the home team.

After failing to do anything in their first drive, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert led his teammates to score three straight touchdowns. Then on their fifth drive in the closing minutes of the first half, they tried to do the same.

Herbert used some short and medium passes to move into Cincinnati Bengals territory, putting the pressure on the defense. Then on a 2nd and 11, Herbert could not put enough power on his throw as Bengals DE Trey Hendrickson was breathing down his neck.

But on the same play, the star pass rusher reached out with his right hand and yanked Herbert by the collar. As the fifth-year quarterback went crashing to the ground, officials called a roughing the passer penalty on Hendrickson. Bengals reporter Mike Petraglia noticing the events wrote this on X.

Trey Hendrickson just swatted Zac Taylor’s hand down in anger as Taylor tried to calm him down coming off the field without his helmet.

For the eight-year veteran, his frustrations were showing as he took off his helmet while walking to the sidelines. Then swatting away his head coach’s hand suggesting he was not pleased about those 15 yards they lost.

Trey Hendrickson’s roughing the passer call was incorrect

The reasons for Trey Hendrickson’s frustrations were not born out of a mistake. As replays showed he purposely yanked at Justin Herbert’s collar as an offensive lineman tried to move him away. But his frustrations became justified as NBC commentators discussed the call on replay.

When the officials were discussing the penalty, replays showed the position where the Los Angeles Chargers QB was standing when the pass rusher made that horse-collar tackle. Seeing this, NBC’s Cris Collinsworth mentioned this during the official broadcast.

It’s a horse-caller, but you can have a horse-caller in the pocket. Terry, am I right? The guy who knew it first and foremost was Hendrickson.

NBC’s rules analyst Terry McAuley confirmed Collinsworth’s analysis. Which meant, that Trey Hendrickson knew all too well that his horse-caller tackle on Justin Herbert was legal. As the quarterback had not left the pocket, making the penalty incorrect. This is why he was frustrated as another referee mistake meddled with the game.

In the second half, the pass rusher and his teammates managed to slow the Chargers down. On the other hand, Joe Burrow pushed their offensive teammates to score 21 unanswered points to tie the game. But two missed field goals and a Chargers touchdown meant the Bengals lost 27-34.
