Trey Lance is sticking around in the NFL. The former third-overall pick signed a contract with the AFC West team, the Los Angeles Chargers.

Lance entered free agency after just 4 appearances and one start in two seasons for the Dallas Cowboys. He completed 25 passes from 41 attempts for 266 yards (61% completion rate), one interception, and 11 rushes for 41 yards.

According to multiple reports, Lance struggled to find a team even though veterans such as Gardner Minshew and Joshua Dobbs bagged jobs in the first few days of the free agency. His wait is finally over as he heads to learn under Jim Harbaugh in LA.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that Trey Lance agreed on a one-year contract worth up to $6.2 million.

Lance joins a quarterback room comprised of Justin Herbert and Taylor Heinicke. He will battle with the former Commanders and Vikings placeholder for the backup job.

Football fans are convinced the Chargers overpaid to sign Trey Lance

The terms of the contract may confuse those who aren’t well-versed with the monetary side of the gridiron world. Schefter wrote ‘up to $6.2 million,’ and he didn’t mention any guaranteed numbers. Lance’s base salary should be between $1.5 and $2.5 million.

The $6.2 million (same as Heinicke) is what Lance can earn if he completes certain criteria during the 2025 NFL season. However, fans only saw the number and concluded it was too much for someone who has a 2-3 win record in four years of professional football.

Of course, the actual breakdown of Trey Lance’s contract will be made public once he signs the contract at the Chargers facility later on. But fans still think the Chargers overpaid.

However, the Chargers signing Lance closed the door to Canada.

A big miss for the CFL

Lance’s football career was uncertain after the Cowboys released him earlier this year. When he realized other NFL teams weren’t keen on signing him, the North Dakota State graduate found hope north of the border.

Canadian Football League team Saskatchewan Roughriders listed Trey Lance’s name in their negotiations list. At that point, moving to Canada seemed like a golden opportunity to get some playing time under his belt. His dad, Carlton Lance, played as a cornerback for the Roughriders, so he wasn’t unfamiliar with the surroundings.

Trey Lance was a three-star athlete coming out of high school. He signed for FCS side ND State Bisons. During his second season at ND State, Lance went 16-0 to catch the eyes of scouts all over the country. However, the following season (2020) was abandoned due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Instead of playing a couple more seasons, Lance decided to announce for the NFL draft, ending his college career with 17 wins, 208 completions (65.4% completion rate), 2947 yards, 30 passing touchdowns, and one interception, along with 192 carries for 1325 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns.

Despite producing a limited tape for NFL teams to evaluate, the San Francisco 49ers decided Trey Lance was the franchise’s future and drafted him 3rd overall in 2021. However, constant injuries and the emergence of Brock Purdy pushed Lance out of San Francisco.

The 49ers traded Lance to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick. By using that pick, Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch drafted safety Malik Mustapha in 2024. Meanwhile, Lance dropped to third string at Arlington and was out of Jerryland after two seasons.
