Soccer star Trinity Rodman flew to Montreal from Washington to cheer for her boyfriend Ben Shelton during the Canadian Open. She, in fact, surprised him with an unexpected visit before his match against Joao Fonseca in the fourth round.

She knocked at his hotel door and, upon opening it, Shelton wore a befuddled look before closing the door in her face. Rodman recently appeared on Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, during which she opened up about how their romance started.

Everything I do is just embarrassing. I’m really embarrassed. I said, ‘You’re sick, fire emoji’… That’s it… It worked, he responded within 10 minutes, so I win… He matched the cringe situation, and then I think a week or two later we met in person.

Rodman and Shelton first met when he flew out to stay at her home.

I fully committed to this guy that I didn’t even meet yet, for him to stay at my house for the weekend. It’s actually crazy, it’s insane, but it worked out. It’s the best feeling in the world, honestly. I think to know we’re both on the grind, running our bodies to the ground, always exhausted, doing what we love, and then to also be able to be a little like a WAG in a sense, it feels so good for us.

Shelton, in Montreal, reached the final after beating compatriot Learner Tien. In the title clash, he defeated Brandon Nakashima to defend the title, becoming the fourth man in this century to do so.

Ben Shelton on his Canadian Open win

Ben Shelton clinched the second Masters 1000 title of his career. It was also his fourth title of the season in his fourth final. Before Montreal, the 23-year-old won the Dallas Open and the Stuttgart Open against compatriot Taylor Fritz. He also beat French Open runner-up Flavio Cobolli in the Munich Open final.

At the press conference after his latest win, Shelton was asked whether defending the title has given him confidence to challenge players like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

I love having people out in front of me that I can chase, it’s been that way my whole career — I’ve never just been the best, I’ve always been chasing the best, been a little bit behind in my progression, and I think that’s pushed me in every aspect of my tennis game.

Alcaraz and Sinner did not compete. The Spaniard withdrew while recovering from a wrist injury. Sinner chose to rest after playing non-stop tennis, missing the chance to bid for the Golden Masters.

I’ll continue to work to chase the guys in front of me, and obviously try to stay ahead of the young guys coming out on tour. I played a lot of young guys this week — the future of the sport, really high-quality players, and there’s so many more coming up.

Next is the Cincinnati Masters, where Shelton is a two-time quarterfinalist. Defending champion Alcaraz and last year’s runner-up Sinner withdrew. Sinner is nursing a knee niggle.

The Italian last played in the Wimbledon final, which he won by defeating Alexander Zverev. It was his sixth title of the season after his wins in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, and Rome.

Alcaraz was last seen in action in the first round of the Barcelona Open. The seven-time Grand Slam champion has played three finals this season, winning the Australian Open and the Qatar Open, and losing the Monte-Carlo Masters.
