That picture of John Cena‘s head wrapped around in the clutches of Gunther from Saturday Night’s Main Event will live on forever. And the fact that Cena let out a smile before tapping out for the first time in over two decades made his last match even more poetic.
He built a career out of embodying the slogan of “never give up,” but he did give up on Saturday. Even though the fans in the arena were berserk over that sort of a finish in a match that was Cena’s last as a WWE performer, that’s exactly what the company wanted out of it.
As per Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque had a smile on his face over the closing shot of Cena vs. Gunther, which absolutely sucked the air out of almost 20,000 fans packing the Capital One Arena.

To make matters worse, those ticked-off folks started chanting “bullsh*t” in the immediate aftermath of their hero tapping out to ‘The Ring General’. Triple H did arrive at ringside, accompanied by his wife, Stephanie McMahon, and the rest of the locker room. ‘The Game’ faced the wrath of an irate wrestling crowd that booed the WWE CCO every time he appeared on camera.
‘Hunter’ also went on to hug Cena in the ring in a moment that elicited jeers from the crowd. It clearly was a way of people letting the WWE CCO know that “he fu*ked up.” Apart from ‘The Cerebral Assassin’ getting blasted by the fans for booking Cena to lose in the way he did against Gunther, the latter, who delivered on his prophecy of making the 17-time world champion tap out, has unlocked new levels of hatred for himself.

A post-event clip of the Austrian is going viral on social media, in which several fans hurled profanity at Gunther as he was getting escorted by security. The amount of heat that the former Imperium leader has generated from retiring Cena is what WWE desired, as noted in the Fightful report.
What did Triple H say about John Cena tapping out to Gunther?
One would not have expected Triple H to go out in front of the fans once again after how they treated him in the arena every time he came in the vicinity of John Cena. ‘The Game’, however, went on the post-show of Saturday Night’s Main Event, and the fans were at it. The 14-time world champion got heckled for the majority of his stay on the panel.

He also explained the rationale behind Cena tapping out to Gunther. ‘Hunter’ borrowed what Cena has said time and again, which is that he always wanted to leave this place better than he found it. ‘The King of Kings’ admitted that the fans might not be able to wrap their heads around ‘The Cenation Leader’ bowing out in a way that many believed was anticlimactic, at least in the heat of the moment.

“John has said the right thing his entire career that it is about leaving this place better than you found it. I think that there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment, but you do what is right for… pic.twitter.com/rTQfwWbDIN
But in hindsight, the realization of doing what’s best for the business will prevail. The former DX member affirmed that he’ll continue making decisions that he believes are right for the future of WWE. Cena hung in there for over 23 minutes with a man who is arguably the most physical wrestler on the current WWE roster.
One could see those welts around Cena’s chest, thanks to some relentless knife-edged chops from Vienna’s very own, whom Michael Cole has dubbed as the ‘Terminator’. As soon as ‘Mr. Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect’ knew it was over for him, Gunther cemented himself as the standard bearer of the professional wrestling industry.
